Dresses with slits - yea or nay?

Jo, on August 28, 2018 at 8:05 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 27

What do you think of bridal dresses that feature a slit? This is becoming a popular feature in many bridesmaid dresses and wedding gowns, but will the style last? Will anyone be showing off their shoes (and a bit of leg!) in a slit gown on your wedding day?

Do you love slits in wedding day looks? Yea or nay?

I honestly don’t care for the look. It seems, I dunno, trashy isn’t quite right but I can’t think of anything else. If you want to show a little leg and your shoes, go tea length.

If it's a tasteful slit and doesn't extend all the way up to their hip, I don't mind them, but a lot of them are cut way too high IMO and end up looking trashy.

Why on earth would it be an issue? It's hardly a new thing, if they weren't wearing a dress with a poofy skirt, they were wearing a sheath with a slit to allow for walking back when my friends and I were getting married in the 90s, and they were a rerun of earlier decades when sheaths were popular. The mix of full skirt and slit is a tad more recent but have still been around for quite a few years.

In my opinion I feel like it looks nicer on bridesmaids than brides.

I agree for them to be on the bridesmaids dresses!

My bridesmaids all have slots in the dresses. The slit and a belt was something all dresses had to have to match and they chose it. It looks elegant and really nice when they are all together!

I don't think anyone has an issue with it. And it's not new, but it is gaining in popularity within wedding fashion at the moment and I'm curious to know who from the community loves the look. Plus it's another excuse to look at some members' dresses!

Ooh, do you have any pics? What kind of belt are they wearing?

That's the thing it's not a "trend" that's currently gaining in popularity. It's been a thing for a very long time. If all you wanted was for people to share their dresses then just ask. However, members share their dresses on the regular already

My girls dresses have slots but it's not a feature we sought out. The one we chose just happened to have it. I don't feel one way or the other about them

I am a BM in my cousins wedding this fall and my dress has a slit. I don't mind it, it only comes to my knee, but having her wedding outside I definitely anticipate being chilly in November.

I think a tasteful slit is perfectly fine on brides, and can accentuate the sexiness of the dress if its sheath or another style that doesn't have any poof. I don't think its trashy unless its extremely high, and the ceremony is in a place of worship.

I don't see this as a new trend, either. My parents got married in 1990 and my moms bridesmaids had a slit in their dresses.

Don't worry, I didn't use the word trend anywhere. I like this style and I'm hoping lots of other members will get excited to share their opinions and talk about their gowns.

Provided they’re not all the way to the waistline, I don’t mind slits in BM dresses or bridal gowns. The slits shown in the pics of original post seem appropriate for those brides.

Ok you didn't use the word trend, but you did say "becoming a popular feature" and "gaining in popularity". I'm saying it's something that's been around for a very long time (my grandmother's dress had a slit back in 1939) and hasn't gone in and out of fashion. It's just a thing. If you want members to share pictures of their dresses just ask. Members do it all the time.

Talking about and sharing members' dresses is definitely what I'm hoping for here! Do you have any photos of your grandmother's dress so we can see some of the history of the style?

This look is definitely having a moment in wedding fashion and I am here for it!!! I have worked in a few bridal salons and as of late there have been many requests from brides to put their girls in dresses with slits. One of my favorite styles is Dessy 3012 in CrepeSmiley love Smiley love

I personally wouldn’t want a dress with a slit, chances are it wouldn’t look right on me. But I think they look great on other people, if that’s their style!

I like a tasteful slit. The first two photos are gorgeous while the last one would look better if it was shorter. I didn't realize this was a new trend, I've seen tons of skirts/dresses with a slit over the years.

I don’t have pictures yet because they’re still being altered to fit but all of them bought the same color and fabric. There needed to be a slit and some sort of belt and they picked that out! My one bridesmaid bought a wrap style dress with strappy top and is adding a silver diamond filled belt. They’re all honestly beautiful!

I don’t mind it if it’s tasteful, but no one in my party has a slot in their dresses.
