Dress shopping jitters

Sara, on June 25, 2019 at 10:09 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
Has anyone else been very nervous about dress shopping? I’m so excited but scared at the same time! I’ve always been my own worse critic and I’m soooo indecisive. I’ve been trying to prepare to get to a weight I’m comfortable at after giving birth a few months ago, I just hope I get lucky and fall in love with something and it doesn’t take too long. I can’t wait any longer to look since our wedding is April 2020. Can anyone relate?

Is there anything in particular you'd like to try on?
I say always be open minded but if there are certain styles you wanna try on already it would be easier

I’m really liking a lot of fit and flare dresses even though I always imagined I would be in an a line gown. I’ll definitely explore my options I do have pictures of both styles. I like detail, jewels, even some lace. See I’m all over the place lol This picture here is one of the first dresses that I saved

I understand your nerves but your bridal stylist should be supportive and understanding! An A-line is the most flattering silhouette but feel free to try on different styles. A dress can typically be taken in up to two sizes so you can take the pressure off by ordering a dress in your current size, then have the dress taken in.

Congrats on your new baby! And being engaged. 😃

I was so nervous about dress shopping! I have always been self conscious about my weight and with the stress of grad school the last couple years I had gained a lot. I went to my appointment with a totally open mind about style (I thought Aline was the best for me but ended up with a mermaid style) and took people that I knew would be honest but supportive. I am also incredibly indecisive (really makes wedding planning fun lol) and I struggles with committing to a dress. I ultimately ended up buying the very first one I tried on (go figure) but I put it on 3 times and then even went back to try it on one more time. You will find a dress that will make you feel great!

For A-line... If you're more "blessed" in the bust, sometimes illusion tops don't have the best support for the "girls." Anything with straps is good. And strapless can provide great support because usually boning and rubber in bust cups, and it's pretty easy to add straps (narrow, wide, cap sleeves) to a dress--just ask about the cost of ordering extra lace/applique from the designer or if there's enough to take off the hem. Just don't rule out strapless because it's not horribly expensive to add short sleeves to a dress you adore.

If you have curves, a fitted (trumpet, fit & flare mermaid) can look great too. But if you're more pear-shaped (much bigger hips or booty, much smaller bust), a fitted dress might accentuate a pear shape--not good. But try on a few to see!

I just had my first appointment and it was exhausting and disappointing. A few tips I wish I knew :

Seriously only bring your most supportive friends/family. I felt like I HAD to invite my mom, and I really regret it. She stresses me out and her and my sister just argued the whole night. I should have just gone with my sister and MOH.

Bring a huge water bottle!! I was so nervous that I guzzled mine down and had to keep refilling it in their drinking fountain.

If you have your own strapless bra, wear it.

If you have a robe or something, bring that too. I ended up stuck in the dressing room for 5-10 minutes a couple times in just my underwear waiting for the stylist to grab something and it felt really awkward. If I'd brought my robe I could have thrown it on and hung out with my friends outside while she grabbed things.

Also, give someone your phone to take different angled pictures of everything you like!! Once I got home and was relaxed, it was awesome to flip through the pictures. I now have two dresses that I'm going to go back to try on by myself.

I was a little nervous about how comfortable I would be, but I had a great experience. I want to a small local boutique, and the stylist I had was so nice, and it made everything go smoother since I was comfortable. Wear comfortable undergarments, and the store I went had built in bras in the dresses, so I didn't need to wear a bra if I didn't want to. Make sure to find something you are comfortable in. I pulled a dress to try on that my mom and sister weren't interested in, but as soon as I put it on, it felt so great I didn't want to take it off, and they fell in love with it too. I was happy I had my mom and sister, since they know me so well and they know my style and what I like. I had some ideas about what I wanted and didn't want, but I was open to trying other things on, and once I did I was able to figure out what I felt comfortable in.

Thank you for that, I would have never thought about the robe! I’m definitely bringing both of my sisters who I know will be very honest and my 8 year old daughter, no one is more brutally honest than a child 😂

I’m glad you had a good experience. I’ll be sure to go in with an open mind. I feel like if I don’t try something I like just because I don’t know if it will be a good fit for me I’ll always wonder about what if I did.
