Dress change timing!

Kari, on May 16, 2021 at 9:09 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

My husband and I eloped due to Covid last year and we are finally having our wedding celebration, which is in less than a month. I have gone back and forth about getting a reception dress - I absolutely love my wedding dress and definitely want to wear it again but my husband has already seen it, and I would love to surprise him with a new look.

Well I tried on my dress today after not having worn it for nearly a year and it's snug! I'm currently about 5 lbs heavier than when I wore it last and the dress is a fit-and-flare silhouette with zero stretch. It looks great, and I do fit in it, but I'm not sure I can sit in it and definitely don't think I can dance the way I want to. I do want to lose a couple pounds before the wedding but need a backup plan. Enter - the reception dress!

I bought a beautiful silk slip dress and need to get it altered (its probably a size too big and definitely too long) but I think it will work. It will be perfect for dancing and because its a less fitted style I should be really comfortable in it all night.

When do you think is an ideal time to do the dress change? I ideally would love to wear my wedding dress for a little more than just the ceremony itself and for our first dance, but if I can't sit in it then I think I'd have to change before dinner. Doesn't the order of events usually go, dinner, first dance, cake cutting, or something like that?

I need some creative ideas here! Also, I'd love to kind of "have a moment" when I change dresses and am not sure what the best way to go about doing that is.

Main question: how long do you have for your reception? You don’t want to miss part of it if you have a time crunch of only 4 hours not counting cocktail hour.

As far as extra pounds, maybe look into an at home version of Weight Watchers, which is calorie counting, which works for some, in addition to ramping up an exercise routine. Lots on YouTube if time/cost is a concern.
The order of the reception is up to you. Even if the venue coordinator pressures you otherwise, you can do whatever schedule you want. Some couples have a first dance and cut cake before dinner so there is no right or wrong.

We aren't in a time crunch at all. We have the venue all weekend and my bridal suite is in a loft over the reception area, so a dress change would take all of 5-7 minutes or so (and most of that would just be me very carefully putting my wedding dress away). From start of dinner to end of the reception is about 4 hours, and I don't think missing 10 minutes of that will be a big deal at all. I'm also not worried about losing weight. I work in the fitness industry, know my body well, and can pretty easily make myself have a "fat day" or "skinny day" based on my habits. I'm sure I can correct the things I'm not doing right to lose 3-4 lbs before the wedding day, and if I don't lose any weight its not the end of the world at all either; I'm not popping out of my dress I'm just not about do any deep squats in it right now.

We can obviously flip-flop the order of events however we want, but I do want things to make sense. I'm not opposed to a first dance before dinner but definitely will not be cutting the cake until after everyone has eaten. I'm also fine with wearing my reception dress for the cake cutting; I do want some memorable photos in both outfits. I would prefer to do dinner first, but first dance beforehand isn't a deal breaker. It will probably just depend on if I can sit in my wedding dress or not!

Same! My April 2020 wedding was canceled. Wedding is next month and dress sooo uncomfortable now. I bought a 2nd dress that I will change into between the end of cocktail hour and beginning of reception.

In that case, change between dinner and first dance.

I’m changing after the first dance and then again before the cake cutting.
