Does anyone know about the 'liquor licensing' issue in ny state?

We want to serve beer/wine/champagne/hard cider at our wedding, no liquors. But we want it to be a self-service DIY bar because my wedding is quite small at <50 guests and we may have family access to wholesale pricing.

Do I need a license for that? I heard there was such a thing as a one-day beer and wine license for a $36 fee but the wording is confusing to me. It makes it sound like it's for retailers but we wouldn't be charging guests anything. We'd be a host, not a retailer.

I'm also looking to buy wedding insurance that includes host liquor liability and have been able to find that. Would that have anything to do with this? I can't believe I need a license to throw a bunch of cider and beer on ice for my friends and family next to a few cases of wine and some glasses. Especially since lodging is onsite and no one will be driving home. Maybe it's because I'm from the southeast but that seems backwards to me.

I can’t say much about the license but I will say that we had 48 people including ourselves and we brought all the drinks. Like literally all of the soda, beer/wine/ liquor we supplied and we still hired a bartender. Our venue had a mobile bar. Honestly having one really made a difference I feel. It was nice to go up and have him pour a drink and that way our guests didn’t have to do it themselves which was really nice. Just food for thought! I understand it’s an extra expense though. Hopefully someone will know about the license for you

Were you able to find him independently or were his services packaged with another vendor like catering?

So our venue was a completely do it yourself venue. They had recommendations for a lot of vendors they previously worked with and liked and he was one. So he was independent. You can google wedding bartenders near (location of your event) and see what you can find. That’s what we did before going with this guy. There’s plenty of sites for things like this
