I think it all depends on what you need from your DJ. Also consider that these people are loading up all the expensive equipment, arriving to the venue early for set-up, taking the time prior to set up playlists and have the songs you want on your day downloaded, working the entire event, and then having to pack it up. They have to take a whole day for your event, and are charging accordingly. Our DJ is $2,000, and I've seen prices between $1,600 and $2,400. I'd definitely use the cost guide, bit I think the quotes you were receiving are pretty on par.
