Natalie, on March 31, 2014 at 3:11 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 1 21

Has anyone tried making there own detox drink with cucumbers, lemons, dandelion root tea bags, etc?? Does it work? I am looking to do this the week before my wedding-- but i wonder if its worth it. Thoughts?

I drink it just to spice things up from my regular water routine.

It's not a cure all and it won't make you lose 10 lbs in a week (or a month).

It tastes good and it'll make you drink enough liquids for you to pee a lot - which is good!

I think the recipe calls for PURE cranberry juice too.

Yep- it does! I am not a huge water lover to begin with (which is not good!) but I thought of maybe giving this a shot the week before we leave for our wedding, I just can't find any reviews if it has helped people out or not.

I've done this. It's an expensive drink to make, but I tried it for about two weeks. I can't say I noticed any "water loss", but I did feel as though I slept better that week. I may do it again at some point, the taste grew on me. My girlfriend is a pharmacist and suggested that about once a month do a miralax (half a bottle) and gatorade prep.... now THAT works. haha

Oh god thats sounds awful. Why dont you just do a normal juice fast with apple carrot beet juice or smoothies? Or replace a meal a day with a smoothie? DONT STARVE YOURSELF the week before your wedding it will make you PALE with dark circles under your eyes and pale clear skin and gross why would you do that? You want to be shining before you wedding, not weak and starving.

Want to flush SAFELY? Here is a great smoothie recipe from Skinnytaste. I drink it for breakfast every morning. And in the afternoon... well... to put it mildly, it works SAFELY.

AND it tastes YUMMY. Don't let the green freak you out.

^^ agree with anisea. and "cleanses" are straight up silly. you have your liver & kidneys to cleanse you. if they're fully functional, you don't need a drink.

I also think the Miralax and gatorade prep is very dangerous advice. I'm honestly surprised anyone with any medical training at all would even suggest that.

To be clear, this drink does NOT replace any meals. 64oz is to be ingested in addition to your normal diet. No starving here... adding a little extra actually.

I don't want to replace meals ---I just wanted to cleanse/detox before we left for vacation for 11 days Smiley smile And I want to do it the safe way. I have been using our nutribullett every morning and replacing one meal a day with a smoothie type drink. I just read about putting cucumbers in water being healthy, etc... I was wondering if anyone had tried it

I haven't done any detox drink. However I do an Herbal Cleanse. I use Advocare. In 24 days I went from a size 18/20 to a size 14/15 doing the 24 day challenge. Every 3 months I do the Herbal Cleanse and loose 5-9 pounds in the 10 days!!!

@jess and sean, That is the reason they have you use Gatorade to replace the electrolytes, but That is exactly what you have to do when you go and have a colonoscopy done. It's not dangerous, it's not something you want to do 5 days a week but a few times a year will not hurt you by no means. I've had to do it twice in a year and I'm still standing and alive to tell about it. Again as I said it's prescribed by doctors this way instead of other means to clean yourself out.

Sounds healthy and yummy and if it'll make you drink more water the that's a good thing. Cucumber is a cooling food which helps with inflammation. And lemon water is great for your skin.

Having a colonoscopy (to detect a medical condition) does not equal a way to "detox" your body with some home remedy. Think about it this way - if your body couldn't "detox" itself, why wouldn't doctors have you do this cleanse all the time? Why wouldn't the medical profession be making millions off once a year colon cleanse visits, just like well check ups and Pap smears??

If anyone can name one chemical cited in a peer reviewed journal thay this "detox" removes I will give you a cookie (or Gatorade).

Medical advice from a friend who is a pharmacist does not equal advice from a physician who is actively supervising you prior to undergoing a colonoscopy.

I'm truly not trying to be snarky here. Misinformation like this upsets me in that someone could read it here and do something truly dangerous without the proper knowledge of the implications.

Just so there's no confusion, "detoxing" does not cleanse your body in the same way that your liver and kidneys are responsible for, it encourages diuresis. Also, there's no harm in using a once monthly miralax cleanse. In fact, as a medical professional myself, I know that doctors often times prescribe miralax to be taken DAILY. The only way this could be "truly dangerous" is if there was dehydration and loss of electrolytes... Hence the Gatorade. I would suggest you do some research before crashing a thread with misinformation.

    Edit for typo

I work in a pharmacy and that's just SOP for a colonoscopy prep. It's a lot healthier than the other mixes and flushes y'all have up here. I'm curious as to what medical training you have that makes you an expert.

I'm probably going to get a lot of heat for this; but detox drinks don't work. It causes you to lose water weight thats it. As soon as you eat real food it'll be the same as before; it's just a "quick fix"

Doctors recommend that "prep" before a colonoscopy all that time... As long as you do it correct it is not dangerous, you just have to stay hydrated..

In the summer I tried to make a drink from celery, ginger and apple. It's just disgusting to me... I literally felt sick after two days when I drank it. So I don't advise experimenting. Just drink more plain water.

I don't know about detoxing, but I have tried different infused waters and teas just to change up my routine. David's tea has some of my favorites. I don't add any sugar just whatever is in the tea already.
As for the waters my favorites are ginger, lime, and cucumber. I boil the ginger first for more flavor. Mint and lime or mint, lime, and cucumber. Best flavor let it sit for an hour. Lasts about three days at most. Also drinking water as well.
