Destination wedding photographer questions

Kelly, on October 31, 2018 at 12:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

Hello, I am wondering if anyone is having or has had a destination wedding - and if so, how did you choose a photographer? I am getting married at the Couples Swept Away resort in Negril Jamaica in June and I still haven't booked a photographer. The thing is, the resort has their own in-house photography, but you don't get much and the prices are steep for what you get. Also, they don' t give you digital images at all and only keep them on file for 30 days after the marriage. They hit you with a $500 fee to bring in any outside vendors though so I'm trying to figure out if it would be worth it to pay the fee and hire an outside photographer or just go with the resort photographer and buy prints. If anyone has advice.. hellllp!!

Thank you in advance!

    Congratulations 🎊🍾🎉🎈

Could you go online and research outside photographers that have worked with your venue before?

You ciuld even look on Yelp for reviews.

Thanks Kenisha! I have looked up some reviews of the venue that have recommended a photographer in the area. I'll do some more research. I just hate that they charge a $500 fee to use an outside vendor. I guess that's what resorts do though. I appreciate your feedback Smiley smile

Is there a photographer from your area whose work you like? All of my friends that have had destination weddings have flown in a photographer from where they live.

Thanks for your response Kelly! Unfortunately we would still have to pay the $500 fee to use a photographer that’s not from the resort unless the photographer is a guest at the resort for a minimum of 3 nights. So if we flew someone out we’d have to pay their airfare and a 3 night stay which would probably be more than the fee. They really try to make it so you don’t use outside vendors apparently!

Yeah I understand that. Is that wildly outside your budget? To me pictures are super important!

Pictures are super important to me too. It is definitely more than I planned on spending, but I'm trying to figure out if we could cut costs somewhere else to make up for it. I guess I'm just frustrated because the whole reason we decided to have a DW was to save money, but everything just adds up. We are getting married (just fh & I) in Jamaica then having a reception back home in Seattle when we return, so I feel like I'm doing some stuff double now! Thanks for your input and thanks for listening.. I think I'm just venting now haha!

There is a website called Fearless Photographers where you can search for the best Caribbean photographers. Not gonna lie, their prices can get up there lol. However, their pictures are gorgeous and if its within your budget I say take a gander over on that website.

I had an issue wit finding an in town photographer for our out of town wedding so i ended up hiring someone that lives near me (400+ miles from where the wedding is) and she just wants to go shoot over there. So it works out. Plus she’s working on her portfolio so she was super cheap and she’s really good. $60” for 9 hours. Here’s some of her work.

Thank you so much for your response Erin! I actually (finally) booked a photographer in Jamaica. I really like her work and she covers the resort fee for outside vendors which was a huge plus!

You really should get the digital images! I think it’s worth paying $500 to get the photographer you want AND get the digital images.

We had a DW and chose our photographer based on his reviews, wedding gallery online, and his awesome vibe when we chatted by phone. Loved him! He also included a 2nd shooter which I HIGHLY recommend—you get so many more pics even if you only hire the 2nd for 1-2 hours (ask the photographer for a quote for a 2nd shooter).

Thank you so much for your suggestions!! I did end up booking a photographer outside the resort that will include the digital images and I know I will be so glad I did! It will definitely be worth it 😊

It definitely will be worth it. We got $1K+ digital photos and I still wish for more. Some are perfect for an album, some are gifts we printed for guests. You don't want to limit yourself to a set number of prints for a day that you've probably spent 12 months+ planning. Smiley smile

    Kelly,
We’re getting married in Jamaica as well! I’m also having the same issue. I don’t want to use the resorts photographer. Can you recommend the photographer you used? What resort in Jamaica did you get married at?
    Thank you!
