Destination Wedding in New England... HELP!

Ashley, on November 18, 2010 at 11:46 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 17

We are planning a destination wedding in New England. We haven't quite narrowed down a state yet, but the FH has family all over. I was wondering if anyone had any unique/decently priced reception site suggestions! Preferably one where the ceremony could be held as well. We are on a pretty tight budget.

I live in NH and when we looked for our venue it was extremely difficult to find a decent priced one. There are some good places but it all depends on what kind of wedding you're looking for. New England altogether is pricey sorry to say but again it depends on what kind of wedding ya want ie. In/outdoor, season, small or large etc etc. Eventually we settled on the boston marriott long wharf, had only 65-70 people but was still pricey. If you PM me I can send ya links to our favs. New England is def beautiful.

To make suggestions, we'd really need to know your budget and the size of your guest list. For example, we held a reception in the private dining room of a Legal Sea Foods, but that would not have worked for more than about 25 guests.

We got married at the town hall in Strafford, Vermont (http://www.photographersdirect.com/buyers/stockphoto.asp?imageid=1345216). Lovely and inexpensive, but not very large.

Remember that the phrase "New England" includes some of the most (Boston) and least (rural New Hampshire) expensive places in the country to get married.

We got married in NH on Lake Winnapasakuee at a place called Church Landing. www.millfalls.com Considering the places we looked I thought it was fairly reasonable for the amount of people we had. We stayed, got married at and had the ceremony all in one place. I just posted my professional pics you can check them out and see the whole place

I'm biased, but I think Rhode Island has the most beautiful wedding venues in New England. At that time of year (September) anything by the water will be beautiful -- especially Newport or Block Island, if you can fit them in your budget.

We're getting married in Newport and managing the cost by having an off-season, Sunday day-time wedding. I think I still have some New England area Bridal magazines - I'd be happy to mail them to you if you message me with your mailing address.

We were leaning towards NH and the Chase House at that Mill Falls place looks amazing, and just might work. We have a guest list of 75-100, and I'd like to keep it under $8,000.

Ashley- We were married at Castleton, in Windham NH it was amazing- I highly recommend! You could definitely make Castleton work with your budget. I have a ton of pics I could send you the link if interested. Let me know if you have any questions. I still have people talking about how amazing the food was! http://www.castletonbcc.com

We are getting married in Vermont at a B and B in the Mount Snow area. My problem was not venue, as much as it was finding a caterer. The caterers in Vermont were over the top expensive, and many were not interested in doing smaller weddings. The travel costs were very high. We finally found someone from New Hampshire to come to Vermont.

My advise...make sure your venue has a caterer.

    Good luck!

After quite a few hours on the internet, and some creative thought, I have found a summer camp that we could rent out for a weekend. I believe they have professional chefs that would come with the rental. I think that would work more with the 'feel' of the wedding that I am going for. Guests could canoe, play volleyball, and get to know each other better. It would also be a great opportunity for us to actually spend time with our guests.

I am waiting to hear back from them to see what the fees are.

Sounds like fun! We had a similar kind of "wedding weekend" with various activities, although our DW was in Vegas. But we had dinner the night before at a sushi place on the Strip, and then the wedding the next day at Valley of Fire followed by a reception in a suite at TI, and then a wedding brunch the next day at the Bellagio Buffet. I agree it was a nice way to actually spend time with people, although even with only 35 guests I felt like we didn't see THAT much of most of them. With up to 100, I think you'll be surprised how fast time goes.

Anyway, welcome to WW, and I love your icon. Smiley laugh

To everyone that mentioned RI, I agree, it's beautiful here!!! My sister who lived in California had a destination wedding here, at the Bay Voyage Inn in Jamestown, RI (the island right next to Newport Smiley smile) and I'm planning mine to be at Whispering Pines Conference Center in West Greenwich RI... Love lil rhody Smiley smile

I agree that RI; Newport, Gansett, Westerly has some of the nicest most picturesque areas in all of New England but the key word is budget. Unfortunately budget and Newport do not go hand in hand. Plus she is looking at a camp in NH.That it totally different feel than a Newport wedding.

Congrats on the booking! Like Cabell and you, I love the idea of 50 of our nearest and dearest spending some q time together. Guests will arrive on Friday, and we will have a welcome dinner, and camp fire. We will all have breakfast together on Saturday morning, and then, a ride is being organized to get everyone out while my caterer and I decorate. It is going to be both car and biker friendly and include Mt Equinox and some Vermonty tourist destinations and covered bridge tour. Wedding is 4:30 on Saturday. On Sunday, we all do breakfast again, and we finally get to ride with our guests. It may be way more work, but I love the intimacy of it all.

    Good luck with yours!
