Decor regrets

Emily, on January 22, 2024 at 1:23 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 11

Is anyone else struggling with some of the choices they made for their decor?

Overall, our wedding day went well. Nothing bad happened, the vendors all delivered, and I think everyone had fun. We got married in an outdoor garden/grass setting.

We recently got our pictures back and I can't stop kicking myself for not working harder on reception decor, and it's really ruining my entire perception of the reception. It's actually hard for me to look at pics of the reception tables because I feel so guilty now for not working harder on them.

The main thing is that I went with the standard white folding chairs that came with the venue. At the time, I felt like I didn't want to spend the $1800 to upgrade the chairs to chiavari or bentwood. Now looking back, I feel like i KNEW that the white chairs looked terrible and I don't know why I didn't just cough up the money to upgrade them.

We did our own centerpieces with my BMs which was fun. We did bud vases which I think turned out nice, but a little "quaint" looking.

I also didn't do menus or favors and I really regret that now. I almost wonder if our guests were shocked at the quality of the decor at the tables.

Does anyone else have these second-thoughts after their wedding?

Is that your actual table or an inspiration pic? It looks gorgeous to me!

The chairs go perfectly with the outdoor setting. A typical guest should have found everything pleasing. That is the goal, beyond the fact of celebrating with you.

Actual photo of the table. Thank you. I’m just nagged by the fact that it didn’t look as nice as it could have and my guests probably noticed. I can’t tell if this is just social media fear mongering or if my guests actually thought I was cheap….

This looks really pretty. It does not look cheap at all! More is not always better.

Social media fear mongering. Honestly I hate what it does to all of us, but legit that table is really lovely!

The table is beautiful. Mine were much simpler, but no one seemed to mind. As a guest, I’d rather have simpler decorations and better food! 😆

The table looks lovely! Honestly, the over the top table scapes you see on social media are more of a hassle for guests. When you’re a guest, you don’t want to constantly be moving a giant flower centerpiece so you can talk to the person across the table without flowers in your face, or trying to squeeze your drink glass somewhere because there’s so much decor on the table, leaving little room for actual dinnerware. Most guests are more focused on their experience over the way the chairs look or the color of the napkins or whatever. The decor is really for you, not the guests. What you have looks elegant and clean without feeling to ostentatious and extra.

Your choices are really pretty. I like how the muted white chairs coordinate with the white tablecloth to showcase the colors on your table. The budvases give a modern silhouette for your floral design and the result give chic, colorful minimalism with range of height levels. They don't fight with the gold chargers and mint? Napkins. The look is relaxing and elegant. A garden setting is already colorful and eye-catching so you just want a hint of it at the table, but not fighting for the viewer's attention.

I get your post event feelings though as I had them. I settle into my decor wanderlust by looking at other styles weddings (only after my own). I enjoy marveling at boho and minimalist styles and just remind myself those are someone else's choices suited to their style and not necessarily mine.

We are always our own worst critics. Having the unlimited funds to recreate a Pinterest layout would be lovely, all of which are staged anyway. But you work with the funds you have. As a guest who as attended many weddings and other formal/casual events, your table decor is gorgeous! Anything more would have been overwhelming for that particular aesthetic. Those chairs you used are super comfortable compared to Chiavari, ghost chairs, spandex covers, etc that couples want to use to “elevate the look” and it makes guests sit as little as possible. Some guests don’t dance and if chairs are uncomfortable so they can’t sit to socialize, they will leave early. Even the black plastic conference chairs are more comfortable than Chiavari.

The centerpiece is the perfect height to not obstruct views and conversations which many do. If they are too tall/wide, guests will remove them or only talk to people they can see. The majority of weddings and events we have attended didn’t have any centerpieces or chargers or the “expected” extras that Pinterest leads you to think you need, and guests didn’t miss them.
