Day Of Hair and Makeup Timeline

Sharonda, on December 13, 2020 at 8:38 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 24
My wedding is in January, so I’m almost in the home stretch. Eeekkk!! I’m finalizing my day of timeline and I’m stumped with figuring out the order and time for hair and makeup. My wedding starts at 3 pm and I’m the only person getting those services. My fiancé and I aren’t doing a first look or pictures before the wedding. Which service should start first and how much time should I plan for each? My goal is to be ready and waiting to start by 2:30. Thank you!

You should have your hair done first followed by makeup

Do you have a photographer? Are the hair and makeup being done by the same person or two different people?

If you have a photographer, they should be helping with a general timeline. If you have your need-to-be-ready-by time, you can provide this to your hair/makeup artist, and they will tell you how much time they need.

I had my makeup done first, then hair. Both took about an hour each.

My photographer has created a general day of timeline, and I have two separate people doing hair and makeup. I will provide my “ready by” time to my HMUAs and go from there. You make it sound so easy! Lol! Thank you!

Haha no problem! Smiley heart Both people are coming to you to provide the services, correct?

I also had one person doing makeup and another doing hair (though they were also providing services to my bridal party).

Once I had the timeline from my photographer, I gave it to my MUA first because she is super organized and experienced, and came back to me with timeslots, buffer time, etc. I then shared that with the salon owner.

In theory, everything would've worked out perfectly -- except the owner of the salon miscommunicated the time to the hair stylist, and she was 2+ hours late lol. But we still made it work!

Makes sense. Just sent my timeline to the makeup artist and after I hear from her, I’ll send it to my hairstylist. So sorry to hear about the salon owner’s mistake, but glad you were able to make it work and it did not ruin your day. Thanks again for the insight. I appreciate it!

Hair 1st than makeup that way your makeup is fresh. Ask your artist how much time it’ll take them coordinate with your photographer.

I had a 2:30 ceremony and I started pictures at 11:45 I think (getting into my dress etc)
We started hair and make up at 8:00, but bridesmaids and mom got theirs done too. And we had to travel from the salon to the venue (25 min)
I started with hair and then makeup (stylists choice for this order) and it took about 2 hrs to get me done. I hope this helped 😊

Oh also. I told my salon what time I needed to be done by and they suggested a start time based on that and how many services they were providing. So you can check with them for a start time

Consult with your beauty team since they are professionals who do this multiple times a week. They know the time frame they need to work with.

Your hair & makeup artist should tell you what time she/he thinks you should start. Also, discuss your timeline with your photographer.

I would start with hair around 9-10AM followed by makeup.

YAY almost that time! I think it'll depend on a few things, what's the style your going for? Is it a natural style or are you getting a sew in? Bonus about sew ins, they can be installed a few days prior and then styled day of, or installed the night before which will definitely cut down your get ready time. Speak with your hair and makeup team and ask how much time they'll need to complete the service. I totally recommend getting your hair done first before makeup so none of the products land on your face and such. Depending on the style, your hair may be a hour and half and makeup maybe 45 to an hour. Maybe 11:30am.

Very good points!! I’ve decided to wear a style that won’t require a sew in, so my hairstylist will be working on my hair the day of. I’ve already reached out to my HMUAs to get an idea of how much time they will need based on my “be ready by” time, and my MUA suggested that hair go first too. Thanks so much for helping me narrow down the timeline!
