David's Bridal Alterations Costs?

Jana, on January 18, 2019 at 1:34 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 31

Has anyone gotten alterations from David's Bridal? Or know how much alterations generally run? I got my dress from David's, and I'm waiting for it to come in, but I can't decide if I should do alterations there or not. All I hear are horror stories about their alterations department charging astronomical prices for simple alterations. One of the worst I heard was a friend of a friend who needed a little hook put into the back above the zipper and they were going to charge her almost $800 to put it in. She took it somewhere else and they only charged her $0.98 for the cost of the hook. They said normally they would have charged her like $15 to pay for the labor, but they felt really bad that she almost paid hundreds of dollars for that.

I know I will need it bustled and a belt sewn onto the front, but I'm not sure yet if I will need it taken in at all. I included pictures of the train that needs bustling and the belt that will be sewn on.

I know some of it depends on location, but any insight into what kind of costs I should expect would be helpful.

I thankfully didn't need alterations but if I did the last place I'd go is DB. I've never heard a good story about their alterations prices or teams. I bought my dress from them and then was going to look for a local person but the dress fit perfect the day of and it was tea length so no bustle needed.

I got my dress from David’s and we didn’t do them there. My alterations lady is a friend and advise we not because they are extremely expensive compared to other places.

I personally wouldn't. I too have heard horror stories. Right now I'm shopping around because I know the bridal store I'm going through will charge me $800+ for alterations when a friend said the alterations specialist she used only charged $200. I know the bridal store I went through does PHENOMENAL work but it's just not in my budget to pay a ton of money for alterations unfortunately!

I'm not really sure about alterations, just popping in to say that dress looks bomb on you.

The bridal salon (not DB) where I got my dress from quoted me $650 for my alterations and a local seamstress quoted me $150. If you want to get your dress altered there, can you have an alterations consultation where they will give you a quote? Otherwise, I would seek out a reputable local seamstress.

It really depends on the type of alterations you will need done. The biggest expense for my dress was having it hemmed. My dress was also from David's Bridal and a very similar lace pattern to yours. The lace caused the hemming to be extremely expensive. I think I paid $700 to have the dress hemmed, a belt sewn on, one strap shortened, and a bustle. That was at a local seamstress who specialized in wedding alterations. If you don't need the dress hemmed you will save a ton of money on a lace dress. I do recommend finding a local seamstress over DB though. I have also heard tons of horror stories about their alterations.

When I bought my dress, I think they quoted me around $300 for all alterations. I'll have a complicated bustle, the dress needs to be let out, and hemmed quite a bit. I've also heard horror stories about DB, but because I have to have my dress let out rather than taken in, I'm too scared to take it anywhere else.

I went to DB (because I don't know where else I would have gone) I had a 14 point bustle (one over one under, hemmed (I had 4 layers) dress taken in, cups added and straps shortened and it was around $300.

They cut my dress too short when hemming it but they did replace the dress on a rush order (3 weeks before the wedding!!!) and were able to redo all alterations in time.

I learned the lesson not to use DB the hard way. (My fault for not doing more research ahead of time.) I paid almost $600 to have the bust take in, the sides let out 1 inch, and the bustle done. I'm not sure if this was a fair price or not honestly, but it seemed like a lot!

Never hurts to price around. Smiley smile

If you google something like DB price alterations, something should come up. I’ve seen a chart online somewhere. I needed cups sewn in ($20). They are adding the clamp above the zipper for free. To have a belt sewn on is $50.

They should be able to give you a quote on how much it would be to get all that done. For my dress they quoted it'd be 250 to hem the dress. I don't remember how much the bustle was quoted for.

I’d contact some local seamstresses/alterations companies, most likely they’ll be cheaper and do amazing work.

That is insane! For what you paid for the dress and alterations you could have gotten a custom dress made

Beautiful!!! I've heard the same things and seen multiple friends go through that. The issue I've ran in with mine is I have found sewing shops that alter wedding dresses but if David's Bridal knows you will have someone else do it, they check with the designer to get permission to alter it. The sewing shop I found for mine to shorten the hem and bustle it, was $100. Far cheaper than what David's Bridal charges.

I already ordered my dress through David’s Bridal. I also was ordering sleeves which was a nightmare because when I called they told I could come in and try them on to decide, except I already decided I wanted them and they weren’t listening and I had to talk to a total of 6 different people on three different phone calls just to get the sleeves. My dress comes in around late February but now I am second guessing using David’s bridal for my alterations. All the staff there and on the phone seem to be inexperienced and unable to listen and answer my questions.

Ugh I got my alterations at David's and they cost more than the dress cost me Smiley angry

My dress was $320, the alterations were $475. I went with them because it was still under my total budget for the dress and super convenient. I briefly looked at bridal shops in the area, but they were around the same price. I go to pick my dress up on Friday, fingers crossed I will be satisfied and this won't be another DB horror story!

I paid for a hem, sides taken in, belt tacked on to the front, and an over bustle. In order to take the dress in, they had to take the zipper out because of the dress design- that was also an extra cost.

I joke with my mom that I could've just gained weight and bought higher heels to save myself about $500!!
