Custom Wedding Band - yes or no?

Clare, on September 23, 2020 at 7:42 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 3 10

Hi all!

I've been searching for a wedding band to match the beautiful ring my fiance proposed to me with. I'm having a lot of trouble finding a ring that I like to match as a wedding band. I'm pretty picky, so maybe I'm overthinking it, but I'm considering a custom band from Kay's. My engagement ring is a princess cut, so it has been hard to find rings that contour to the stones without leaving a gap. I'd like them to be seamless!

Has anyone else worked with a major jeweler, like Kay's, to have a custom ring made? If so, what should I expect to pay for a modest custom ring? I'm not looking for lots of swag or diamonds, mostly the shape.

Thank you!

I had a jeweler make a custom band for me and it was very reasonably priced but more importantly it fits with my engagement ring perfectly.

Oh good to know! Did you use a local jeweler or one of the big brands? (Trying to see if it's worth finding a local guy vs. the large stores)

My husband had my engagement ring made by a jeweler in Philadelphia and we went back to the same place. It wasn’t one of the chain stores.

I'd go talk with a small local jeweler and see what they can offer. Based on daughter's experience and stories I've read on this forum, Kay's and the other big retail jeweler's aren't known for their attention to detail and customer service. Daughter's engagement ring was a Kay's wedding band with the diamond solitaire added to it. Her sales person was the one who suggested it to them in response to what daughter wanted. It took three tries for the manufacturing staff to get it right. When it came time to get her ER and wedding band soldered (they needed to be very carefully aligned), she took it to a small local jeweler. They did a wonderful job and she was so much happier with the process.

I got a custom band made to match the contours of my engagement ring. I went to a local jeweler and paid $550 for the band. The diamonds are halfway around. Custom Wedding Band - yes or no? 1

I would highly recommend working with a local jeweler rather than a chain. One great piece of advise I received for custom jewelry is to make sure they make it on-site where you’re speaking with the salespeople. This really ensures that there won’t be missed communication and also if there are issues they can fix them right there rather than shipping back and forth. They are also more likely to have better customer service and design experience.

I have to agree with previous posters, talk to small local jewelers rather than a large chain. Kay’s is notorious for not making the highest quality pieces of jewelry. There have been lots of brides on here who have had to abandon their rings from Kay’s all together and purchased a new ring. There have also been brides who have continuously lost stones out of Kay’s jewelry, and have received custom pieces that could then never be resized due to the construction of it. Plus, if you work with a local jeweler, you can take your ring in regularly to have it cleaned and inspected for free, and if any issues arise with it they will be right there near you to fix the problem. If you cannot find anything local, I highly suggest Saint Mae. I have been working with them on my custom enhancer, and they have been incredible so far! They are a small company, and the owner herself was the one working with me to ensure a perfect fit with my ring. I cannot say enough about their customer service! They sent me 3D CAD renderings of the design and tweaked it 6 different times for me until it was exactly what I wanted.

Thank you, everyone! I am going to see if I can find a local jeweler to make my ring. Fingers crossed I find a lovely one at a reasonable price!

I got a custom engagement ring from a local jeweler and it was a great experience, and honestly it was not significantly more expensive.

We found a ring that I mostly liked and then worked with her to customize the size and number of stones.

We had it customized at Darry Ring's online store and although it took a little longer to get it done, my husband and I both loved it and the special customization cost $300
