Coordinating Hair and Makeup

Alyssa, on August 28, 2019 at 2:51 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 17

Hi all, just wondering what is a nice way to go about hiring for hair and makeup? I envision having them come to us, but I have a bridal party of 8 women and then four little girls. I also don't want to force my bridal party to get their hair and makeup done if they don't want to, I'm happy with them doing their own if they like.

I just have no idea how to even start looking, as the wedding is in January, and IDK if the girls will want their hair/makeup done. I also don't have any idea what a decent price is for the works.

Truly any advice here is helpful.

Thanks!

I would ask your girls how they feel about having it done and go from there. I will say that a lot of places have a "minimum service amount" either by people or dollar amount. I'm having a horrible time trying to find someone reasonably priced that doesn't require 6 or more people to have hair and makeup done. The only ones I can find who are willing to do just me are still at least $500-$600. Insane in my opinion.

Definitely ask your girls what they want to do first. I was also quoted $500 for just my hair and makeup since I don't have a bridal party so consider that possibility. Before you approach salons, you really need to know about how many girls want their hair and makeup done.

I would start by asking the girls what services they want done (hair, makeup or both or none), ask the ones who want it done what their price range is then start looking into salons that do hair and make up and will travel and are around the price range and then go from there.

Thanks all, I'm going to do just that! I'll get the girl's thoughts and move forward! Appreciate this as I honestly didn't know where to start.

So definitely ask them if you are not paying for it. I am paying for my girls to get their hair and makeup done but they don't have to if they don't want to. Then when I was looking for artists and if I wanted to travel to a salon or not the question was transportation. I didn't really want to get a limo/party bus for everyone to get to the salon and then to the ceremony and then back to the hotel or wherever their car was when FH and I just want to leave after the reception. I know salons are cheaper per se but I thought about transporting 8 women including myself and then the little tiny humans too and said nope. It's up to you though! I'm spending about $1300 for 8 to get hair and makeup done.

Agree with previous posters but I would also start reaching out to hair and makeup artists ASAP and ask about pricing and minimums. With your wedding being only 5 months away a lot of artists that come on site might be booked.

I'd start getting quotes, and find a person you like. I'd do that very soon because they book out if they are great artists. I booked ours 12+ months in advance. I paid for all the women in our wedding, but if you aren't just text everyone and tell them the price to get theirs done and make it optional. Then you can communicate with the HAMU artist. I paid $240 for my HAMU and $140 for bridesmaids/mom HAMU.

I agree with others here that you better get started, as they often book up quickly and far in advance. I booked mine almost a year out, and I know from talking to her that she is booked through the next 8 or 9 months.

I found her on Wedding Wire's vendor search, actually. I just input hair and makeup artist, and my area, and there were several hits. I sent each one an email asking for their pricing and availability for my date. Some I didn't hear back from at all, but most of them sent me what I was asking for. Then I reached out to the one with the best prices, and we started talking and I ended up hiring her! It was just that easy. Then I actually met her in person before the trial, as she was going to be at one of the local wedding expos, and I went there to meet her. We really hit it off, and scheduled the date for my trial. She had a hair stylist from her salon in mind for me, and brought her along for the trial. It all worked out great!

Thank you, I will start reaching out to vendors. Is it expected for me to pay for services for everyone? Or is it ok that I make it an option for them to pay for their own? That would be a huge expense for a bridal party my size. Not that I'm complaining, but I'm fine if they all want to do their own. I mostly need my own done, but if others also want, they should have the option, right?

If you make it optional, then you don't have to pay. You only have to pay if you tell them they have to get it done. I would try to get someone to come to you if possible. I think it's a lot easier logistically, and if you are running a little late, you don't have to worry about travel time as much. Not sure where you plan to get ready, but if it's at a hotel, house, or at your venue, I think it's more fun for the girls who are not getting it done to still come that location and hang out with people. I would think they probably wouldn't want to go to a salon if they were not getting anything done. Good luck!

I would ask everyone what they want, then reach out for quotes. Usually if there’s a lot of people they’ll bring two stylists.

I got lucky and am having two friends who are in the industry do my hair and makeup. For the hair she said she'd do me for free (yay!) as a wedding gift but wasn't sure yet how much to charge per girl as she literally just graduated cosmo school a week ago. For makeup, its a friend from high school that I worked with. She's got her standard bridal package and then everyone else is an additional cost that can be decided on at a later date. I'm hoping to negotiate with her a little bit to see if we can get the price down if so many people agree to book (making everything optional). But I would just see how flexible the artists are, that was a huge priority for me as I wanted to lock in my vendors but and still too far out to have an official timeline or to ask my girls if they are interested in the those services.

I'm having my hair dresser come to my house
I told the girls If they want there hair done be at my house at this time and its 65 dollars. We are doing our own make up otherwise I would have done the same
Find the person you want get the price send it to the girls and let them decide from there

If you're having someone come on site, you may have to have a minimum # of heads.

That's a good way to do it. So far no one is interested in makeup, save for one who is hiring her own. A few said yes to hair, hoping to get quotes back today! Thanks for the tips.
