Considering a "spontaneous" honeymoon

sbarr6, on May 5, 2017 at 1:08 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 9

We're undecided on where to go on our honeymoon. We're all over the map - Greece, Argentina, Africa. There is a two-week span we could go (probably for 7-13 of those days). We want it to be awesome but not too expensive, and we're pretty spontaneous people. Sooo... last night we came up with an idea... we're thinking of not booking it until a week or two before we plan to go. We would check all the last-minute vacation deals (there are always so many available), and pick the best deal to the coolest place. We like the idea of going somewhere totally off our radar, that we otherwise might not have considered... And to us it sounds exciting to not know until a week out that we're going... wherever! Trying to decide if this would be too stressful/risky. I want to be talked into (or out of) this idea... haha. So indecisive! Anyone done something similar or had a good/bad experience with last-minute travel booking???

Last minute travel ONLY works if you know what you are getting into.

If you travel and not plan anything are you OK with just seeing what you stumble on and perhaps missing out on some famous or popular places not well known?

Are you OK with visiting a specific place maybe more than once?

Certain countries I think require some planning or else I'd feel like I missed out.

I travel with a ton of planning and then see what we can get done and see and feel. The worse thing while traveling is feeling like I am wasting my time because I did not plan enough to do or see etc.

    Going abroad is never spontaneous.

I have never booked a holiday more than 2 weeks in advance. We are very last minute people. Our HM we booked on Wednesday and flew out Friday. We didn't care where we went. We had a list of things we wanted and narrowed it down and then sat down and booked.

I think it's also more exciting. Instead of the excitement being gone you are literally still riding it while flying. Pick up guidebooks at the airport and decide what you want to do.

@Olivia - Ha, I know, part of me is anxious about this idea too. We're hoping we'd find a full vacation package deal that has lodging and flights and maybe some activities included.

I know someone who sets up travel alerts and sometimes goes abroad a day after he buys the tickets. He is traveling alone, and it isn't honeymoon-type traveling, he's staying in hostels or with friends. Its a great way to get a deal, but I wouldn't want to risk not getting the type of vacation I want for my honeymoon. What if you get to a week out and haven't gotten a "good deal" on anything yet? I would research the deals you can get now, and save those spontaneous trips for an anniversary or something later in your life Smiley smile Your honeymoon should be special!

@Helena - Awesome! That's exactly what we're thinking too - the excitement factor!

I don't think you are crazy. As long as you don't need a visa wherever you go, there is really no reason everything has to be planned and booked ahead of time. I went to Honduras a few years ago because I happened to find a cheap ticket leaving in 1 week's time. A week gave me more than enough time to research some interesting things to see and do in a bunch of cities all over the country.

I do have a (potentially) better idea for you, though. Check out google flights. They have a feature called "explore destinations" where you can put in your departure city and the dates you want to go and it will show you pricing for all over the globe. Adjust the max cost to whatever price range you are trying to stay within and you may be surprised what you can find! That is how FH and I wound up in Colombia for his birthday last fall. I wanted to take him somewhere that neither of us had ever been, and it had to be cheap to fly to. I kept checking back on google flights daily until a sale popped up with flights under $400 to Bogota. Boom. Done. Colombia it was! And that was a couple of months ahead of time, so if there had been any visa issues or complicated logistics I would have had no problem sorting things out well in advance.

If you guys are regularly spontaneous travelers and have been abroad before...i'd be totally down with the idea! There are a few things to consider though...

One thing that may stress me a bit would be hotels depending on where you ended up going. For example a lot of tropical places/islands have limited resorts and such..and you could wind up in a less than ideal hotel.

Another would be vaccines and visas...Some foreign countries requires paperwork just to visit, which would have to be done a considerable amount ahead of time. And should you pick a super exotic place that CDC/HHS/foreign gov requires/recommends specific vaccines for, you are really limiting your time on that... Like visiting parts of Africa or Asia would probably not be doable without some prior planning on those things.

That said--we love taking random trips and often book trips on a whim when we see crazy deals, so this could be amazing, but youd have to be super flexible in your honeymoon expectations..

I think your plan is fine, OP, but like others have said, you have to be prepared for the possibility of missing out on stuff because you didn't plan ahead. For example, you realize that just a week later there was going to be this really cool festival, or whatever, going on that you would have LOVED to see. Also, assuming that you already have a passport and it's a passport that allows you travel to many countries without needing a visa, there are still a number of countries that do require visas. Are you okay with passing up an amazing opportunity because you won't have time to get the appropriate visa? Just give it some thought. If you're okay with all of the above... god speed. I hope you have an amazing honeymoon.
