Companies Refusing to Refund. Anyone Else?

Pirate & 60s Bride, on April 28, 2020 at 10:33 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 11

Ugh. Our long-awaited official European honeymoon will have to wait even longer. I've been upset for couples whose venue won't refund their money due to COVID. Now it's my turn. After three filed claims and two calls, Norweigan Airlines won't refund our money (even though the flight is cancelled). They say it may take 10 weeks for a refund but I'm worried because the airline isn't looking good. Several have already filed for bankruptcy (American Eagle--Compass, Virgin Australia).

If we do eventually get a refund, we'll probably wait until 2021 for a trip because we don't want to risk giving money to an airline, hotel, or tour company that could go bankrupt AFTER taking our money (sadly, if we don't get a refund, no European honeymoon because hubby is also on furlough now for several months. I know losing honeymoon flight money isn't the end of the world if we still have our health and food on the table but I just need to vent right now).

Anyone else holding off on a summer/fall 2020 honeymoon, or wedding, because of bankruptcy concerns about airlines, hotels, venues, etc?

Yep! We were having a delayed honeymoon to the Maldives which is now cancelled. We really struggled to get a refund from Emirates (they cancelled our flight too). They were offering vouchers only or we could pay $800 to “cancel our booking” and enact the refund policy. Crazy! The flights were very pricey and were definitely not planning on spending that much on a vacation any time soon given the current economic climate. Thankfully Emirates changed their policy and have said they’ll issue a refund, but that could take a loooong time to actually hit our card. We actually talked to AMEX about a charge to dispute if the airline refused to refund us since it’s illegal to not refund for cancelled flights originating from the UK (where were based). I get annoyed when I think about it too but I’m just thankful we are healthy and safe at home. No one likes cancelled plans and losing money though!

I have a friend with this same issue with this same airline! She’s having no luck disputing it with her credit card company either. I saw yesterday that Norwegian airlines will keep most of its planes grounded thru 2021 so it’s not looking good unfortunately. I’m so sorry! I thankfully had no travel planned this year but I am due with a baby in September. A baby moon is out of the question at this point and I’m just hoping we will be able to see our families again before the fall.

Oh my gosh, thanks for sharing! Ugh. Fingers crossed we get a refund (may need to dip into that money for bills this year but if we don't we can celebrate with a honeymoon trip sometime in 2021).

Congrats on your baby! Perhaps a local "baby moon" will be okay by then. But yes, best that we're all healthy. Smiley flower

I had to cancel a work trip in March but because the airlines (American) didn't cancel the flights yet, I could only get a voucher unless I wanted to fork over 50% of the fees for the cancellation fee. Fortunately, I think that airline will be ok.

$800 to cancel the booking??? Ridiculous. Hopefully, you'll find a great deal on the Maldives when this is all over.

$200 per passenger per a flight - not booking (had a connection) really adds up. Think we might hold off and make it an anniversary trip some time. Hope you get your refund and eventually get to plan a honeymoon that works for you!

I am so sorry, I know you guys have been waiting a while. What a disappointment. We were going to take a honeymoon to Hawaii this summer but we didn’t book it yet so we didn’t lose any money, only our hopes and dreams. I’m fine with waiting a year but we’re trying soon so I don’t honestly know if we’ll ever go.

Thank you, Mrs S! ❤️ We just had our 3rd year anniversary in March and planned it for spring. 😔

Be glad you didn’t book. Ooh, well a baby moon might be nice too. 👶 ❤️

Fingers crossed you get your refund soon!! 🤞

I think it's a good sign that their policy explicitly states that you can request a refund of your unused ticket!! Taking an incredible vacation together is always an amazing experience - no matter when it happens. You'll definitely appreciate it even more when you can finally go! Smiley heart
