Combining insurance and providers

Kari, on April 12, 2021 at 1:20 PM Posted in Married Life 0 6

My husband and I each receive health insurance through our jobs (and both of our companies have a penalty policy and won't allow us to combine insurance), but we have the same HSA provider. We have separate vehicle insurance companies, which are separate from our homeowners insurance. We also have different doctors, eye doctors, and dentists!

For those of you who combined insurance to simplify your bills and save money, how did you go about doing it? Right now I'm trying to combine our vehicles and homeowners insurance and its such a frustrating process because everything is on a different billing cycle.

If anyone has gone through something similar, is there anything you did that simplified the process for you?

We had different car insurance providers prior to marriage. We were both equally happy with the service they provided, so I just called both and got quotes for combining. His company gave us a significantly cheaper quote for the same coverage, so we went with them. We also got our renter's insurance tacked on for another discount. When I canceled my policy, I believe they just prorated the final bill and that was that.

Did you get a refund for funds unused?

A number of our bills are paid annually and everything renews on a different cycle, so I'm concerned we won't get money back for policies we cancel early.

Not married yet, but I just changed insurance companies for my car and renters insurance. The old company sent me checks for unused funds once the cancelations when through, so maybe about a month later.

Oh, we both paid monthly, so I don't know. I would call the company directly and ask about that. I would assume so unless there is a clause that says they do not need to refund money if you terminate early.

Car Insurance companies dont typically work like cell phone contracts. Refunds will happen. We combined our car insurance upon the recharge of billing. Updating doctors shouldn't be an issue as long as his and your insurance is taken at the office. Phone calls should be able to square all of this up. I really think you are thinking it's going to be a bigger issue than it turns out being.

Mind the health insurance - I kept mine for a month or two after we got married, until we could sort it out and I did *NOT* get a refund.... even though it turned out his insurance kicked in for me right away (his company was not clear on this, though I appreciate their streamlining it).
