Cocktail Hour Music?

Brittany, on May 22, 2019 at 1:27 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7
So, my venue doesn’t have a connection from the main ballroom to the cocktail hour space, so if I go with my DJ for the cocktail hour it could cost a lot because he’d need to bring extra equipment and do an additional set up. I wanted to know what other people have done. I have been considering making a playlist on an iPod or something and have that play for an hour or maybe a band for an hour? Any tips people have I’d really appreciate! Thanks!

Your DJ is charging you extra for that? Our DJ is doing the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception (all on the same site but different locations throughout the venue) without charging extra. Have you talked to him/her about it? Most people have the cocktail hour in a separate space from the reception room.

Have you signed a contract with the DJ yet? I made sure we were set on an agreeable price that included the cocktail hour before signing with mine. Otherwise, a speaker plus a phone with Spotify or another commercial free music app should be fine!

My ceremony, reception, and cocktail hour are all near each other but in separate rooms. It its only costing me an extra $50 for the remote setups (main set up is in the reception hall). We talked to 4 different companies before choosing ours and they were all right around the same price for the remote setups. It really shouldn't be that expensive with everything being wirelessly connected now-a-days. I would definitely confirm how much extra they are charging because a large additional fee sounds shady.

I haven’t signed a contract yet. I was thinking it was standard because the venue also mentioned that our DJ would charge extra and then we met with him and he did. So, it seems like maybe I should keep looking at more DJ’s?

Agree with PP about being charged for music during cocktail hour but cocktail hour at my wedding was what set up the whole night. Everyone was drinking and chatting and the music was lively and people didn't even sit down they were standing around, some even shuffling their feet around. Music is necessary if you want to keep up the mood, even if its a playlist but choose upbeat music, doesn't have to be raunchy music but something uplifting. By the time you do your grand entrance your guests will be in a pretty good mood.

It cost more to add an additional hour for cocktail hour. So we are just using a bluetooth speaker with a playlist for cocktail hour as background music! Our venue has no plugs outside on the deck so it has to be a wireless speaker method.

My DJ was based on hours, not location of set up. He is doing our ceremony (which requires outside set up) and the reception because that equaled "5 hrs" for his base package. Does seem weird that yours wants to charge extra for additional set up, when most weddings these days have various locations for each piece of the event!
