Cinque Terre or Amalfi Coast or Venice for our Honeymoon in October?

Elizabeth, on May 16, 2019 at 9:45 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 4
Hello! We are traveling to Italy for our honeymoon at the end of October. We fly into Florence and fly out of Rome. We are spending the first 6 days in Florence and the last 2 in Rome. We have 2 extra days and are trying to decide if we should do Cinque Terre, Amalfi Coast or Venice. We would be traveling there from Florence and traveling from there to Rome. We are trying to make this decision based off travel time, weather, and which is the best to see that time of year! Any opinions would be very helpful!

I have heard cinque terre is beautiful but basically like a smaller, more crowded version of the amalfi coast. Haven’t been to any of these places myself though but that’s what I’ve heard from others I know! I would do amalfi, I’ve always wanted to go there!

We just did our honeymoon in Italy...4 nights each in Rome, Parma, and Venice. Hubby had never been to Italy before, I had been to Rome and Florence and was dying to go to Venice. We also decided we wanted to take it relatively easy and not be up early every morning with packed schedules. Have you been to any of these places before? Personally, I'd give extra time to Rome just because there's so much there...we did most of a day in the Vatican, most of another day in the Colosseum/Forum, one day to wander wherever we wanted, plus our arrival day where we did a food tour in the afternoon.

Otherwise I'd say a lot depends on how you feel about travel time. Italy isn't huge, and has decent trains between most of the big cities, but it will still take hours out of a day. Plus you've got some potential backtracking...Amalfi is way down by Naples, so you'd have to pass Rome to get there, then come back up. Venice is in the opposite direction from Rome when you're leaving Florence, so backtracking again. Cinque Terre is much closer to Florence, so less travel time/backtracking.

I haven't been to either Amalfi or Cinque Terre, so I can't speak to how they are in the fall. My previous trips to Rome and Florence were in November a couple of times, and weather was decent for walking around, jeans and a light jacket.

I've been to Cinque Terre and to Venice, though I can't speak to the Almafi Coast. Out of Cinque Terre and Venice, I would hands down recommend Cinque Terre. Venice is nice, but it is a TONNN of walking, it's a bit sleepy, and you might have to worry about significant flooding depending on the time of year that might taint your experience. I enjoyed Venice, but not as much as I would have had I not backpacked solo. Cinque Terre is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen - if you go, be sure to swim in the ocean in the last town - it's the bluest and cleanest water I've ever seen.

**Cinque Terre can also be a lot of walking - you can choose to hike the trail, and when you're in the towns it's walking, but you can kindof limit it if you like, whereas in Venice you have no choice.

    Good luck and congratulations!
