Checks with whose name?

Cassidy, on October 3, 2017 at 9:40 PM Posted in Married Life 0 20

Anyone who is getting wedding gifts and the names on the check is Mr and Mrs. Soandso, how are you depositing the checks? One of you have to sign it? Both? I'm on mobile so can't search

Are both names on the account? Both will have need to endorse. To cash, both must be present

For us, we had to go to DH's bank and add me to his account (we are waiting until I change my name to open a shared account). Then DH signed, and I had to sign twice: once how the check was written, and once with my legal name since I haven't changed it yet. This may vary from bank to bank.

If they write Mr OR Mrs, your FH should be able to deposit it alone.

We just delt with this today! The person who is not on the account it's going into has to sign it! ETA: Looking at the other comments this might vary from bank to bank and will probably be easiest with both of you present

Both need to sign it! We did it wrong before we changed our account to a joint account and the bank called us! Opps!

We don't have a joint account yet since I haven't gotten my new ID yet so it was kind of a hassle depositing all the checks. We had to both endorse the checks in our married names and then I also had to write on the back pay to the order of "husband name" and sign my maiden name and write my driver's license number on it.

Definitely ask the bank. Most likely you both have to sign.

Best option would to check with one of your banks if there is not an account with both names.

A bank won't know your last name, and most likely won't ask to see your ID, if you just want to deposit the checks. It really isn't a big deal.

We plan to open a joint account a month or so before the wedding. In case we have any checks that are addressed to both of us, we'll be covered.

I think it depends on the bank, both our names are on our account but they only needed my husbands signature to deposit

Go to the bank and get his name on the account. Then its ok, also you might have to show marriage certificate.

It probably does depend on your bank. I'd think they'd be understanding.

    @Pairofkings

Why wouldn't the bank know your last name?!

We bank with a local credit union. We both changed our names to a new last name that incorporates parts of our prior names, so we had checks in all sorts of different configurations. My old name, his old name, both old names, Mr. and Mrs. his old name... we just went to the credit union, showed them our documents, and now either of us can deposit anything in any of those different name combos.

We just used mobile deposit, and it was not an issue. Only one of us endorsed these checks. We have a joint account so that may be why. I also have never had an issue with checks being made out to my nickname instead of my real name (very different). I don't ask the bank if it's okay or try to explain how you get my nickname from my real name. I just deposit it.

I just did all of this yesterday! We put all the checks in my account as my bank is closer than his. I was informed from the teller that if it says OR only 1 of you needs to sign it but if it says AND you both need to sign it!
