Charleston VS Myrtle Beach - honeymoon question

kaylarae, on February 26, 2015 at 9:46 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 27

So FH and I knew that because of waiting for my Visa paperwork to finish (I'm from Canada, now in Oklahoma) that we wouldn't be able to leave the country right after the wedding for our honeymoon. The plan was to do New Orleans for a few days and then do a Mexico honeymoon when I had my permanent resident card. But now FH found out that there is a work conference in Greenville, SC the week after the wedding that he needs to be at so rather than me staying home alone I'm going with him (which I have done before). So since we will be in SC already, we are thinking of mini-mooning there before we come home. Now we have been to Charleston before and I LOVE it there (seriously I would move there so fast) but Myrtle Beach also looks wonderful and we have been wanting to go there as well. Any suggestions? pros or cons? Anything that we should check out on either of those areas?

Thanks WW!

Myrtle beach was okay when I went but I LOVED Charleston. Would be a simple decision for me :-)

And honestly I don't really remember where or what we did at either place. I have a picture from the pier in Charleston which I thought was beautiful. Myrtle beach I recall an aquarium where the sting rats in the petting area kept coming out of the water and flapping. Their fins spraying water on me... So I'm not much help with activities :-)

Myrtle Beach has more "to do" but I think Charleston would be more romantic and relaxing. I think they are only about two hours apart so you could definitely do both, depending on how long you are there.

Haha well I appreciate the input!! I'm not too sure what we would want to do for "activities" I just know that both have lots of options. And yes charleston is so pretty! I loved it there. From what I've seen Myrtle Beach looks pretty too.

We went on a Myrtle Beach vacation and then went to Charleston for a day. It's about a 2.5 hour drive. You can definitely do both!

We might do both but I would really like to just spend a few days in one spot without driving since it takes us 2 days to get out there/get home haha

I grew up about an hour from Myrtle beach we used to make Day trips all the time. Myrtle beach has lot more Tourist-type things to offer (Broadway on the Beach, the Boardwalk, IMAX, things of that nature). But the atmosphere of Charleston is great, we are going there for our Mini-moon. Just so much more relaxing and not as commercialized like Myrtle is.

I am not a fan of Myrtle Beach. I have been there a few times. A lot of traffic and very touristy in a run down way. I would stay in Charlston

Tori's got it. Myrtle Beach has a lot of "stuff", attractions, boardwalk, Ripleys Museun etc. Definitely more touristy and commercial. For a honeymoon, Charleston's much more romantic and quaint, but you still get the beach. And Charleston has amazing food. I'm totally biased cuz I'm getting married in Charleston though, lol.

Myrtle Beach is so gross and dirty. Charleston is much much nicer. If you want lovely beaches, though, Hilton Head Island is nice, with cute restaurants/shops. Not as much as Charleston, but still nice.

Myrtle Beach is a touristy spot with lots of beaches, shopping, mini golf, dinner and show type places (Medieval Times and such) tons and tons of vacationers every summer. Its a "fun" vacation spot. Charleston is a deeply historical city and is more romantic in my opinion. I think it all depends on what you prefer. Myrtle Beach is more of a partying spot, Charleston is more of a sight seeing spot. Both have great relaxation places. Charleston is more of a food city and is more pedestrian friendly. Myrtle Beach has more beaches (though they are a few great ones in the Charleston area). I'm of course partial toward Charleston because that's where I live, but I have vacationed up in Myrtle many many times and had a blast. Once you decide, feel free to ask me about more specific rec's on either place.

Not sure of your budget, but check out the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island. It's beautiful. You won't regret it. It's about 30 minutes outside of Charleston.

Myrtle Beach is more fun, and cheaper. Been there countless amounts of time with my family, we stay in North Myrtle Beach because it's a little nicer than South Myrtle Beach.

Charleston is more beautiful and has great culture. Been here several times with my husband's family.

Both places are very nice for a vacation, it's just a matter of what you feel more inclined to do. If you've already been to Charleston together, I'd probably try something new for a mini-moon. Good luck and have fun!

Definitely go to Charleston again! The ladies above are so right- Myrtle Beach is much more 'touristy'. Charleston is a lot cleaner and a much more relaxing atmosphere.
