Changing name in a different state?

Nothing is automatically changed, you have to first file with SSA to have your name changed. From there, you follow up with the DMV about your license in the state you live in.

I used Hitch Switch to help change my name—a lot of people say it's not worth the money, but I really appreciated having all of the forms sent to me directly, as well as a place to go to when I had questions like you're having.

But yes—you change your name in your state of residence. Also think about travel, because it takes time to get your passport, new DL, etc back. We left for our honeymoon the day after our wedding and made sure all flights were booked in my maiden name. I started the change process as soon as we returned from our honeymoon.

It matters where you live, not where you got married!! I got married in NC and lived in DC and that's where I changed my name!

Like the previous posters have said, you'll need to start with the social security office and after that you can start changing your name at the local DMV and everywhere else!
