Changing name in a different state?

Jordann, on November 8, 2020 at 4:33 PM Posted in Married Life 0 9
My fiancé and I are getting married in Florida in 2 weeks (where we’re both originally from), but we live in Massachusetts and are MA residents. I know some states let you change your name automatically when you get married, but can’t find much about FL. Obviously I can’t go to the DMV in Florida to change my license or anything since I’m not a Florida resident, so not sure what I’m supposed to do. Does anyone have any experience/insight on the name change process when you get married in a state where you’re not a resident??

I got married in Pennsylvania, but we live in Maryland. I changed my name in Maryland since that's where I live which is also what you are going to have to do. You would just take a copy of your signed marriage license with you to change your name.

I believe that you will do the actual name change process in your state. Have you called SSA in your state to see the process?

The name change process is started through the Social Security Administration, which is a federal office, so the state you get married in doesn't matter. Once you change your name with the SSA, then you can change your driver's license.

Exactly- it doesn’t matter what state you get married in. Follow the regulations in the state where you live.

Nothing is automatically changed, you have to first file with SSA to have your name changed. From there, you follow up with the DMV about your license in the state you live in.

I used Hitch Switch to help change my name—a lot of people say it's not worth the money, but I really appreciated having all of the forms sent to me directly, as well as a place to go to when I had questions like you're having.

But yes—you change your name in your state of residence. Also think about travel, because it takes time to get your passport, new DL, etc back. We left for our honeymoon the day after our wedding and made sure all flights were booked in my maiden name. I started the change process as soon as we returned from our honeymoon.

It matters where you live, not where you got married!! I got married in NC and lived in DC and that's where I changed my name!

Like the previous posters have said, you'll need to start with the social security office and after that you can start changing your name at the local DMV and everywhere else!

Here's an article you can check out with information specifically about MA:
