Hi Everyone,

This is my first post!!!! I got engaged on NYE and we plan to wed on 11/2. Thankfully the planning has gone very smoothly....until now! We planned on getting married at a church but we have not been able to find a church that will marry us! We dont meet the requirements. Any suggestions as to how we can overcome this hurdle or any other places we can wed? We live in the Merrimack valley (MA). All suggestions will be appreciated!

Look for restored churches as a “venue”. These are church buildings that basically function as a party space but used to be a place of worship. I’ve had some luck also looking at nearby chapels on college campuses and in cemeteries. Most functioning churches want you to be a part of their church body.

Many churches will let you have a wedding ceremony without it being religious. Ask for the non-denominational ceremony. We are getting married in a church, no mass, just a 30 minute wedding ceremony. We don't have to go to counseling or anything.

Are you looking for a church to marry you or a church to be married in?

We have a friend who is ordained or licensed to marry us. So we are going with her.
We didnt want to get married in the Catholic church (his), and my childhood church was sold, and has a few bad memories of why I left organized religion.
Our officiant is still integrating some religious reading into our ceremony.

I'd also recommend trying to find a UU church. Universal Unitarian church, and seeing if they can help you out.

Welcome to the WeddingWire community, Rosa Smiley smile

Every church will have a different rule for that is allowed there. I would advise you call around or do some visits to see if you can find a space that will suit your needs.

Are you looking for a totally secular ceremony or just not a full mass?

Are you having a reception? Most reception venues will allow you to have a ceremony on site for an additional fee. You would just need to find an officiant (JP, priest, rabbi, whatever floats your boat) to marry you. Depending on the time of year, you could get married on the beach or at a park.
