Catalina Island (off California coast) for honeymoon?

Catherine & Nick, on April 13, 2015 at 4:07 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9

FH and I were looking into Catalina Island for our honeymoon and wanted to see if anyone had hotel/B&B recommendations? Did anyone choose the honeymoon suite or pick a hotel based on its amenities (ocean view, complimentary breakfast, champagne upon check-in?) Also, any suggestions on activities to do would be great, since neither of us have been there (and we live so close to it)! Thanks!

I love Catalina Island! That is where FH proposed! As for hotels. I would opt for something that is on the main strip on Avalon by the water. We stayed at Villa Portofino. It was cute and has a rooftop deck that you have access too. You can sit out and see the ocean. Most of the hotels on the main drag have beach chairs that you can check out and sit out on the beach, which is steps away from most of the hotels. If you are into it, check out the zipline tour. You can also rent kayaks, paddle boards and boats and tool around the harbor. There are golf cart rentals that you can drive around the island in as well. I would definitely do a tour of the Casino, which is amazing. You can also check out a movie there too. There is also the glass bottom boat tours which are cool too.

Hotel Metropole has great rooms, some with large spa tubs and fireplaces. Descanso beach club rents great loungers. Beware, Catalina is pricy, but it's worth it. An alternative, is the 4 night Carnival cruise that stops on Catalina. You can stay in Catalina for 1 night and it's the same price of the entire cruise. I'm going in June, I will bring back photos and put them on my profile. Have a great honeymoon!

Catalina is so beautiful! You will have a great time! My only tip is to bring cash, most places only take cash on the island.

Catalina Island is so beautiful, That was our first vacation together. For a matter of fact that is where we fell in love. FH rented a boat one day and we went snorkeling, You can rent a golf cart to shuttle around the island. Great food, shopping, and fun. We toured the Casino, NOTE*** It is not a Casino for gambling. It is the old Movie house that early celebrities went to getaway and see a film. The tile work and architecture are amazing.

We stayed at Seaport Village Inn, http://www.catalinacatalina.com/

It was amazing. The owners make you breakfast every morning in their little café. The hot tub is remote and romantic.

@Trisha - that is exactly how FH refers to our honeymoon (in a good way!) To all the other ladies, thank you for your tips and advice!! It's not for a few more months, but I'm super excited to check it out.

Similar to other posters, we love Catalina too. That was the first vacation that we went on as a couple. He surprised me and took me for my birthday and he picked the Avalon hotel. We went zip lining, snuba, and parasailing. He told me one night over dinner that he was going to marry me one day. Next time we went he proposed :-). That time we had in room massages and did more water activities.

If you happen to travel on one of your birthdays it's free. It's a wonderful place and it holds special memories for us. Great food and shopping too. I'm assuming that you live in California. We don't live in California anymore so we don't visit as often unfortunately.

Let us know if you have any other questions. Good luck!

As the others have said, Catalina is a beautiful place to be, and a great place to honeymoon.

I live a 40 minute boat ride from there, so have been there many times. A few tips.

Do Not stay in a cheap hotel! Unfortunately cheap on Catalina usually means it's really old, far from the main drag, a long walk up a hill and/or has cockroaches, no water pressure, no breakfast etc... (yes I have experienced all of these at various times at numerous hotels)

Please take my word for it, be careful of where you book a place to stay.

Hotel Metropole is great, and is fairly reasonable. If your budget is more, stay on the main drag.

The other ladies are correct, renting a golf cart is my favorite thing to do. We also did a sunset cruise (check the weather first). I have snorkeled off the casino, its really fun. There are a lot of things to do. The restraunts are really good and don't forget Ono's ice cream and Picnic Fry!!

The town closes down about 9pm with a few bars staying open a bit later like Luau Larry's and the Irish pub.

Have a great honeymoon, hope I could help :o)
