Cashing Checks & Thank Yous

Stacey, on May 21, 2021 at 9:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

Help me solve a debate between my husband and I Smiley smile

We got married on 5/8. We just sent a wedding photo to our stationery vendor to print our Thank You cards, but are thinking it could be about 2 weeks before we get the cards back and mailed out, etc.

I think we should wait to cash the checks until Thank You cards are sent. It just feels kind of tacky to me to cash them before properly acknowledging the gift. He thinks it would be more annoying to our guests to hold onto the checks for another couple weeks before cashing them (which at that point would be about a month after our wedding date).

What do you think?

Cash the checks when you get them, and send out a thank you note now - you can send the photo one later. The senders will start to get annoyed if you let the checks sit, and may stop payment on them thinking you never got them.

Cash checks and send thank you cards now. The photo cards can be sent at a later date.

We cashed the checks right away and sent the thank you cards when we got them about a week or so later. Having a check sitting in limbo is the worst, especially if you may not be flush. You have to constantly remember to subtract that amount from your account, which can be anxiety-provoking.

Agree- cash the checks now & send a small note thanking them. Send the official thank you after the wedding. That’s exactly what we did.

Definitely more annoying to your guests to hold on to the checks — they expect them to be cashed, and if you wait they won’t really know when it’s coming so it’s harder to plan around. Nothing rude about cashing before sending the card Smiley smile

Cash the checks now and send the cards when they come in. 2 weeks will be just over a month since you’re wedding. You’ll be fine.

You already spent the money and there’s nothing you can do with wedding thank-you cards at a later time.

You should cash the checks now because they may forget that they wrote it out to and when cash the checks it might put them in a limbo. You can send out thank you card as they come. Here is a little tip about checks: we had a joint account before we got married we had to hold on to a check because the person wrote Mr. and Mrs. Demosthenes Burrage and we could not cash it until I change my name on my license and the joint so that the both of us can sign it and deposit it in our joint account. We did notify the person of this so they can be aware of it. Also if the check is written with both of your name like Alisha and Demosthenes Burrage we both can sign it but I had to sign my maiden name so that we can deposit it in our joint account.

Cash them now and send a card ASAP. They don't have to be on personalized cards.
