Cash for tipping on honeymoon

Hannah, on January 12, 2018 at 12:17 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 14
How much cash do you think I need to bring for a week vacation at an all inclusive? In cozumel? They accept both dollars and pesos. I’ve heard to budget about $150-200 for a week for tipping and bring it in $1’s. Does that mean I need to get $150 in $1’s?!? What did you do??

I could be wrong, but I thought that was the point of an all inclusive that tips are included?

No, tips are not normally included. I doubt you would ever find that on the website of any all inclusive hotel.

You should tip anyone who carries your luggage, your housekeeper daily ($5 or equivalent), your waiters in the restaurants, and the bartender or waiters who bring/make you drinks at the pool ($1-2 per drink) .

Most hotels can exchange dollars for pesos, but the workers are happy to take US dollars.

ETA I would tip even if they say tips are included. I doubt that much of that money actually makes it's way to the workers. As for how much to bring, $5 per day x the number of days of your stay for the housekeeper, $1-2 for each time you anticipate getting drinks at the pool (depends on how much you drink,) $1-2 per meal, a few dollars for the bellhop at the beginning and end of your stay, and some extra for tips for anyone else who provides a service (masseur, hairdresser, sports at the beach).

IT does say tips are included but thought I should still tip anyway. I guess what I’m more so asking is should I bring a bunch of $1’s and $5’s with me and how much? I know I can get more at an atm when I get there

Our hotel specified that tips were included in the all inclusive price. I’ve heard from well traveled friends that you should still tip $1 every time you order drinks and to leave tips for anyone else providing a service but I wouldn’t tip like you do in the states. American currency is worth more in Mexico.

My friend said at her honeymoon in St. Lucia at a Sandals resort the workers weren’t allowed to take any money since it was an all inclusive resort or they ran the risk of losing their jobs.

When I was in Punta Cana last, I tipped about $1 per drink.

Some do inclued the tips in the price but that is for all who work there so still tip them anyways. $5 a day will help them a lot.

I'm not sure how much total cash you need, but definitely bring small bills like $5s and $10s!! We only had twenties on our honeymoon and were constantly needing to get change!

On our last trip to Puerto Rico, I brought $250 in cash for tips in $5s and $10s and used about $200 of it. I always tipped well since that is where they make most of their money. If I can afford a nice vacation, I can afford to treat the people well who are working there for me.

For tipping at the bar, if we're going to be there for a little while I typically tip $5-$10 in the beginning and when the bartenders or servers switch out or we've ordered a few rounds, then I tip $5-$10 again. Or if there's a non-service person, I tip them once at the end of the week. One instance that comes to mind was the "activities coordinator" at one resort, we played volleyball and darts and soccer with him all week and had a blast, so on our last night we gave him a tip, like $40 or something, and he said very few people tip him so it was appreciated.

My husband tends to be a generous tipper, but we tipped almost $400 during out 8-day stay in Punta Cana at an all-inclusive. At least $100 of that went to our personal butler, but we tipped at all meals, drinks, housekeeping, bellhop, and anyone bringing us drinks at the pool. We didn't have time to go to a bank and change the $$ for ones and fives, but we really wished we had done that when we keep having to change out our $20 bills.

I've only been to an all inclusive once, and it said gratuities were included. We tipped sometimes, but not for every drink. We also didn't drink that much, so I'm not sure I would go back to an all inclusive. It was pretty pricy for the amount of food and alcohol we actually consumed. We only spent maybe $50 on tips during the 4 or 5 days we were there.
