Caribbean Honeymoon

Brittany, on January 14, 2019 at 9:25 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 11

So we have been back and forth with options and ideas for our honeymoon. All inclusive resort is not out of the equation so I've been looking at different islands. Originally I was only thinking of like Couples San Souci (because it's still a clean beach lol), but I've tried to look past the Seagrass (Sargassum) issue plaguing the Caribbean waters right now. We went on a Western Cruise last year in April, and it was EVERYWHERE. Turned our bathing suits brown in the water, covered the beaches and stunk when it sat too long. I won't even pick a cruise itinerary that is Western Caribbean during that time of year just because of that! Every article I've read doesn't say it's a season like it used to be, that it's all year round now Smiley sad

So to those of you who have vacationed in March and April anywhere in the Caribbean, especially on the Western side like Belize and Mexico, how was your seagrass experience? Anyone find anywhere that wasn't covered in it during that time of year?

Hi, I am from Puerto Rico. Our beaches are amazingly beautiful and perfect for a swim all year. Check out our Capital San Juan and Culebra (a municipality island). Hope you enjoy the planning.

Hi Brittany! I've been to Mexico in March and the water was clean and beautiful! I was staying in Cancun at the time and never had any problems with it! I would definitely look into Cancun/Riviera Maya area, it's relatively inexpensive and gorgeous!

I go to the Virgin Islands every April (US and or British) and have never come across any of it in that part of the Caribbean.

I did experience it in Late August/early September in Belize though , it was CRAZY. It had quite a stench that took some getting used to!

Ok I'll look into the Virgin Islands. Apparently it's all of the Western Side, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and even some of the western islands closer to Key West. It used to just show up for a few months like the Hurricane Season, but now it looks like it's sticking around year round and it's terrible!

We're thinking of going to St John's for our honeymoon. When you go to Virgin Islands do you get into a Villa/Resort or rent/reserve a single home??

Ugh I wrote a whole response to this a while back but my app was acting up and I see it didn’t post!

We rent a private home/villa on St John. St John isn’t particularly resort-y , so if you’re looking for more of a resort style vacation, I’d definitely recommend St Thomas (check out sapphire bay) and it’s easy enough to day trip to St John via ferry. But it’s a matter of preference/style. We stay in a house on a hill with a pool, so killer views for some pool time and cocktails at the house, but more or less need to rent a car for ease of beach hopping and island exploration. But, we love that, personally, with so many different beaches to explore !

Thank you for your response! We did decide to rent since we can also rent a car and go where we please. This is helpful to know we made a good choice!

Perfect! It’s a great way to go! Smiley smile

I love the idea of a resort but I think that staying mostly in one spot in St John would be kind of a waste since there are so many different beaches and all with their own unique appeal (we travel as a group and every one of us has our own favorite beach!). Driving takes some getting used to, but it’s all part of the adventure. Hope you guys love it!
