Cancun versus Cozumel

Sarah D., on February 17, 2013 at 5:13 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 12

FH and I are booking our honeymoon at one of the all-inclusives. However we are trying to decide between Cozumel or Cancun (and surrounding areas) - Does anyone have any suggestions between the two?

I am not completely sure but I have heard that Cancun has more of a party atmosphere and more nightlife so I guess it would depend on what you and your FH would like to do..

I have been to Cozumel and it was amazing! I cannot speak for Cancun but Cozumel had great beaches and great fish life in the water fro scuba

We are big on being active- visiting ruins, snorkeling, that kind of things... as far at nightlife, we would just hang around whatever resort we decide on, so nightlife doesn't matter too much. My only concern is not having enough to do at Cozumel versus Cancun (and surrounding areas) is a little easier to venture out.

Playa Del Carmen is a 45 min ferry ride away (but a crazy ferry ride - I got sea sick from it lol) So that is an option to go into "town" and sight see.

Id stay in the Mayan Riviera instead of Cancun or Cozumel. its right in the middle of both and you can have the best of both worlds if you want to venture around? Playa Del Carmen is always an adventure with lots of shopping

I've been to Playa del Carmen which is about an hour from Cancun and it was amazing. We took the ferry over to Cozumel one day and it was fun. I agree that if you want to do a lot that you would run out of things to do because it is a very small island. Cancun is definitely a more party atmosphere, but there would be a lot more to do in the surrounding areas. If you don't want the party atmosphere I would look into Playa del Carmen or other parts of Mexico! There would still be a lot to do but it wouldn't be so crazy.

We were going to go on vacation to that area last year and while doing research, I think the area south of Cancun (Mayan Riviera/playa del Carmen) is a good area to be in if you want to go in land toward ruins, to cenotes, and other cool sites/activities...

Cozumel. Cancun has way to many spring breakers. In Cozumel we went on a jeep tour that included snorkeling (tons of fish!), touring/tasting at a tequila farm, lunch on the beach, and some old ruins. The all inclusives have a lot of restaurants and activities. I think our stay included a massage too. There are also some neat markets to shop at too.

We went to Cancun just last month for our honeymoon, and it was really fun. We aren't much of partiers either so at night we just hung around the resort tried out a few bars where we just hung out. We also took the bus downtown for some shopping. I guess whichever you decide will depend on what you want out of the trip.

Another vote for Playa del Carmen. I loooooooooooooooove Playa del Carmen. You can take day excursions to see Chichen Itza (sp?) Mayan ruins, and the beach there is amazing too. You can swim in cenotes. The town is not overrun with tourists, there are resorts and clubs but it still has a charming local vibe. People aren't always trying to sell something, it feels more relaxed, at least to me. Lots of great restaurants and stuff to do. The Riviera Maya is amazingly beautiful.

Cancun - you'd have tons of college spring breakers, and I would think Cozumel would have tons of cruise ships docking that time of year. But I could be wrong.

Anytime I've been to PDC we fly into Cancun, take a shuttle to PDC and stay in a private condo rented off of VRBO. But there are all-inclusive resorts there too.
