Cancun Honeymoon, tips? Anyone been?

Mayra <3, on January 20, 2015 at 1:49 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 17

We recently decided to go to Sun Palace in Cancun, resort and flights booked, yay!!

Any tips? It's my first time in Cancun, we will be going from Los Angeles to Dallas for layover of 1 hr, then from Dallas to Cancun, same when we return.

Any traveling or any tips/advice would be appreciated!!

I went during spring break about 4 years ago...it was INSANE! I see that you'll be going around the same time I was there. My biggest tip is just be safe. I got separated from my group twice one night. A DJ grabbed me around the neck/shoulders and wouldn't let go. Out of desperation, I actually had to bit him to get him to release me before I lost everyone.

Edit: Also, at the resort we stayed at, there were two sections...one for spring breakers, and one for "regular people" who paid more. I would just be prepared for that as well.

I'm sure you're going to be there to relax, and not party, but I guarantee you there will be a lot of young kids around that time. Our hotel also caught on fire and the fire department didn't show up for a half hour. Two of my friends got free vouchers to come back after they picked up some hoses (the only two in the hotel that worked) to put it out. I wish I was making this stuff up haha.

Also, don't forget your dang paperwork they hand you when you get there...you'll need it to get back. I forgot one stupid piece of paper at the hotel, and they almost wouldn't let me on the plane. They had to open up the embassy in the airport so I could get another copy of that dumb piece of paper.

Wow how scary!! Thanks! My concern was spring break but it should be over around that time, Plus Sun Palace is at the beginning of the hotel zone, away from the crowd and it's Adults and Couples only resort. I asked them if it was really busy around that time and they said they don't get spring breakers there.

Yeah that would be my biggest concern. You probably won't see them around your hotel, but you might run into big crowds around town. Other than that, it's beautiful! The biggest thing I found fascinating (being from FL), is that even on really hot days, the sand was cool to the touch, which was nice.

    Thanks Kirsten Smiley smile

I think right now I'm more worried about the flights and our overlay. I hope all goes well with that!

An 1 hr layover at a large airport like dallas does make things a little bit tight... but have faith. I've done layovers like that before and everything works out. You may have to walk a little fast from one gate to the next but I've never missed a flight.

General advice, bring bug spray. For some reason I never thought of this (only ever thought of sunscreen in terms of protection) until I went to Cuba and got mercilessly attacked by sand fleas/mites. lol. When I was in mexico last I made sure to have bug spray and I'm glad I did. The beach definitely had sand fleas, but I did not get attacked like I did in Cuba.

If you're flying into DTW then you should be ok...you just have to walk fast and pay attention to where you going. don't stop to get any food or use the restroom until you KNOW where your gate is.

Other than that I have no helpful information about Cancun...I hate Mexico, Cancun especially

When we went to Playa del Carmen (south of Cancun) in 2013, we used USA Transfers from the airport to the resort. They were fantastic. On time, quick driving, very nice AND it was only us. We didn't have to pick up strangers and drop off at various resorts. They hold up a sign that says USA Transfers just outside the airport, so you know who you are looking for. Looks like it will be $55 round trip for up to 3 people.

On a side note - You may pass checkpoints on the road on your way down to the resort. There will be men with giant automatic guns at the checkpoint. This is normal for there, do not freak out Smiley smile

OMG KM- WTF!? that shit is scary!

I went to Cancun with my mom a few years ago and it was beautiful, but, the drivers. OMG I was flippin terrified of the taxi and bus drivers. Where im from you yield to the pedestrians, nope not in mexico, you yield to the cars!

I am going to cabo for our honeymoon!

Missy, do you think I'll have to go pick up my bags and check in again in Dallas, or go straight to my next terminal?

    Maltese, thanks!

Pancakes, we did reserve a "stress free transportation" thru the hotel, but it was $157 roundtrip max 5 peopl. I asked them about that, I don't want to wait around for other people to arrive to airport or have to go pick up others, they told me that wouldn't happen, so we'll see.

Well if you can cancel and want to switch to something cheaper, I highly recommend USA Transfers. They were great and cheap. If we ever go down there again we will use them again, no question. I found them on TripAdvisor and they have great reviews on there.

We went to Cancun for our honeymoon!! We stayed at Secrets Silversands. It was absolutely beautiful!! Our travel agent hooked us up with Best Day Travel to take us from the airport to our resort. They were great-- very friendly! My advice-- don't fall for the gimmicks when you get outside of customs at the airport in Mexico. They will try their damnedest to sell you side trips and "promise" to pick you up as long as you give them a down payment. Don't do it. Stick with your travel agency if you want to book any activities outside of your resort!

Wow Pancakes, I just saw their prices. Its about 1/3 of what we are paying!

I'm pretty sure I can cancel, as it is not yet paid and they don't get our reservation info until like a few days before we arrive. Thanks!!!

Katie, we don't have a travel agent. I'm booking/researching everything my self, hope that's not a mistake :/

Best Day Travel, I think that's the one we booked.

I'm sure you will be fine! I actually did my own research for our honeymoon too, and just ended up booking through an agency that dealt specifically with Secrets resorts to get a better deal. If Best Day is who you are going with, they were great people to deal with. So you can feel good about that anyways even if they are more expensive Smiley smile But that was my first time to Mexico. I'm sure USA Transfers is great too, like Pancakes said Smiley smile

Yep, and those are no fool around prices, either. I don't think there were any other fees or taxes. My email just says I owed $109 round trip for 3 people to/from the airport and Play del Carmen. I paid ahead of time online so we didn't need to worry about it that day. But we did tip the driver. As I said, it is private. They do not pick up other people. It is just whoever you reserve. If you have any other questions regarding them, please let me know Smiley smile
