We did a medium sized cake. It had two tiers, and each tier was a different flavor. We ordered enough so that every guest could have a piece of each flavor if they wanted. At the end of the night, there were only two pieces left, which we saved for ourselves and ate at the hotel room that night.

Talk to your baker about the size of your wedding and they can help you get the right sized cake! Ours was three tiers but not large ones, and it worked out well for 125 people. We saved the top tier for our anniversary and served most of the rest!

When we spoke with our baker, we just discussed shape, design, and flavor. They scaled the size based on our guest count. We also told them we weren’t planning on saving the top tier for our anniversary (our bakery will replicate the top tier of your cake for your anniversary any and every year you want for $25 and we preferred that over the idea of eating year old freezer cake).

If you’re having cake there should be enough to serve to everyone. As PPs say the bakery will be able to judge the size that is appropriate for your numbers.

If you want a small cake, there is such a thing as a cutting cake, which basically means one tier that you cut and then take home to have a little later. People on these boards seem very split on whether this is OK or not, but I've seen it at plenty of weddings and never heard a guest complain. 90% of guests aren't even paying attention when the couple cut the cake. However, your issue is different. Personally I think a fondue fountain is very specific and you need more variety to make sure there's something for everyone. Some people don't like chocolate, some people won't want to deal with the mess, and a few may be allergic. You don't necessarily need a cake, but think about what else you can offer so nobody has to miss dessert.

We had a bigger cake than guest count because our guests prefer cake over other desserts and we actually didn’t have leftovers to take home. We have been to a couple weddings that had genuinely bad cake (too sweet frosting/dry/no taste) but bad bakers are a rarity out in the wild even though people give the impression that they are the majority. The majority of cakes we have eaten at weddings actually came from a grocery store so they are better tasting than a specialty bakery (in addition to being less expensive but just as pretty), and even with being offered slices of multiple flavors in birthday size slices (the equivalent of at least 2 wedding size slices), the cakes were demolished and no leftovers.

Whatever dessert is served should be enough that both you and all guests are served equally from the same food option. It’s not a good look to have a small cutting cake for pictures and then a completely different non cake dessert for guests.

People may have their opinions, but as an etiquette matter, it's straightforward. Would you make a big deal out of displaying and cutting a cake in front of dinner guests at home then not serve it to them? It's the same thing. A wedding is a private social event, too, just on a larger scale.

We are doing various cupcakes and a cake for us to cut. Leftovers are going with the guest. We are providing to go containers and having the DJ announce to the guest to take what they want.

I'm making 3, 8" round cakes in 3 flavors. We'll have a 4 tier faux cake for photos & the rounds will be cut into 10 pieces each, yielding 30 total pieces. That will be perfect because if everyone shows up, there will 26 people. I bought printed to go containers for any leftover food to send with guests.

I really love the to go containers suggestions ☺️ I think I'll do a small 3 tier cake. Like a 10, 8, and 6 inch. But I'm still figuring it out.

We are having a 3 tier wedding cake.. our cake has already been ordered and paid for. Each layer will sit on an acrylic cake stand with lights and flowers in it. the photo below is what our cake will look like with flowers and more lights added to the stands. purple, turquoise and black is our wedding colors and only thing that will be added to this cake is the turquoise ribbon on each layer. but will be set up just like this. Our cake sizes for each layer will be from bottom to top, 10 inch, 8 inch and 6 inch. We will also have an acrylic cupcake stand with cupcakes with icing in our wedding colors. We will not be saving the top tier for our anniversary as I will have a duplicate made for our anniversary.

Thank you so much Samantha. It wasn't my first choice but my second. I just got tired of the the expensive quotes I kept getting on my first choice because of the hexagon shapes of the cake. So I dropped it and went with this one. it's very beautiful and my FH and I is happy with it and glad that it's ordered and paid for and out of the way and the top tier flavor will be red velvet the rest will be white.
