Cabo San Lucas vs Playa del Carmen

Lesley & Blair, on January 30, 2013 at 4:39 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 12

My FH and I have finally narrowed down our list of places to where we would like to go for our honeymoon. We do realize our wedding is in September and it's hurricane season, but we plan to get trip insurance (and just hope/pray for the best!). :-)

Can anyone offer me any suggestions on which location is better? As well as all-inclusive resort suggestions. Activities? Places to eat? Etc. Any information will be helpful!

Thank you in advance. :-)

The beaches in Playa del Carmen are beautiful and most are swimmable. There are a lot

of Adult Only All Inclusive resorts as well. In Cabo, the resorts are great, many beaches are not swimmable. In Cabo you can stay at a resort that is not all-inclusive if you choose, can walk into town and eat!

Feel free to email me anytime, there is no fee for my services, and I have helped many couples now wedding wire!

We are September as well. Is Mexico still affected by hurricanes? I wanted to go to the Caribbean but opted not to because of hurricane season and I thought Mexico was safe. Maybe I’m mistaken!

@lynzlouhou - I am not sure to be honest with you. I do know the Caribbean is definitely within the hurricane path. Where are you two thinking about going?

My parents go to Cabo every January/Feb (are there right now). They stay in a place with a pool since as you mentioned there are a lot of beaches that don't allow swimming. They always have a great time and enjoy it. They stay in a rental that lets them buy their own food & cook it to save money. But if you are going for a week, an all inclusive might be your best bet.

Also since Cabo is on the Pacific side you don't really have to worry about hurricanes.

I live in Cabo year round and it is truly paradise. However, September is the least favorable month which is why it is inexpensive. We are a high profile location the offers the best of the best with regards to hotels, restaurants, nightlife, and most of all beaches. Being the desert, we only have humidity during the summer months (july, august, september). We are definitely in the path of hurricanes and if you go online and research, september is historically the most active month. Both Playa del Carmen and Cabo are wonderful...but they are very different. It is true that not all of our beaches are swimmable, but we have many that are and the offer everything you need. Also, there are many hotels located on these swimmable beaches. I don't want to deter you from coming to Cabo in September, it could be full of beautiful sunshine the entire time. Just know, it will be very warm and there is a risk of rain/tropical storms. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

All - thank you for your information, this has been really helpful.

@For You, I do - how is the weather there in October, November. We may consider taking a later honeymoon to avoid the hurricane season, as well as save additional money.

I have never been to Cabo, but I have been to Playa del Carmen many times and always love it! There are so many things to do: snorkel, scuba dive, volleyball, zipline, eco-parks and history (Tulum and Coba are near by). There are so many shops and good food in Playa del Carmen as well. I never stayed in the resorts, but several of my friends have and never had a bad experience. Lastly, if there was any place I would recommend eating at it would be El Fogon. There are 2 restaurants in Playa and both are fabulous. One of them looks like a little hole in the ground, but all the locals eat there. You get plenty of food and the price is pretty reasonable. Best smoothies there too! Here is a website from tripadvisor and the info to it http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g150812-d804747-Reviews-El_Fogon-Playa_del_Carmen_Yucatan_Peninsula.html. Have fun where ever you decide to go!

Lesley & Blair – I had the Caribbean and Costa Rica in mind until I found out it’s hurricane season and even though Costa Rica is outside if the hurricane belt it still rains almost every day. Then we got really stuck on going Cancun, Mexico – but it sounds like September isn’t prime in Mexico either! I don’t really know what we are going to do, I need to get it booked though!

@ Lindsay W. - LOL, I know the exact feeling you are having now. I see our dates are one day apart! ;-)

I spoke with my FH last night about the possibility of taking our honeymoon two months later (as long as it occurs in 2013). Crazy thing is, he actually suggested something along the lines earlier this month and I shut it down. After taking some time to think about things, it may not be a bad idea. If we chose that option we would do a mini-moon right after the wedding for a few days. Just go somewhere local to get away. Then take our real honeymoon in a month or two later. It's not an idea set in stone, but definitely something to consider. That's funny that you said Costa Rica. That was our original destination until I did some research and found out that it rains in September almost everyday.

Try not to stress (I know easier said than done), if anything you can always get trip insurance and hope for the best. It will all work out. :-)
