Bridesmaid dresses - same color from different websites?

Samantha, on November 8, 2021 at 10:40 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 9

Hi everyone!

I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by bridesmaid dresses. This is long, and I'm so sorry!

Any advice or input is greatly suggested, especially from those who have been a bridesmaid in the past! I've only been in one wedding and we all wore the same style and same color from David's Bridal, so I'm not sure how much of a headache this would end up being for my girls.

Background:

Originally I was going to give my girls a color (dusty blue) and let them pick any dress they wanted as long as it was midi or longer. I wanted a true mismatched look, something like this, but in a light blue:

However I'm worried about a few things with this:
1) Dusty blue is weirdly difficult to find (on a website not specifically for bridesmaid dresses, like Lulu's or Baltic Born or similar) for how popular of a color it is. Maybe that's my current timing, but still.
2) The plan was to have them send me a picture of their dress before they purchased or kept so it fit the right sort of style/vibe. This likely wouldn't be an issue, but I don't want any comments I make about the dress they pick to come across as picky or annoying.

So then I was going to find one website (Azazie, Birdy Grey, Revelry, David's Bridal, etc) and find a few different shades of blue to have the girls pick from for something almost exactly like the picture below (from Revelry). The problem I ran into was not liking more than two colors from any one website once I got all the swatches in.

Other notes: Revelry styles and fabrics are my favorite, but the dresses are $185 each and not all of my BMs can afford to drop that on a dress they'll wear once; the Birdy Grey colors are my favorite, but I feel like the styles are super limited compared to other options (but their maternity selection is better than Azazie in terms of style in my opinion and I'll most likely have an expected BM); the Azazie price point is my favorite and I love that they have jumpsuit, midi, and tea length options but I only liked two colors from them.

Decision:

I think I've settled on a solution and I just wanted to know if you all think this is ridiculous?

I put all of the dusty blue swatches together from Revelry (French blue), Birdy Grey, and Azazie together and actually kind of love how they're almost the same but not quite (I can't find my David's Bridal dusty blue so I'm not sure how it looks with the others). I was thinking I would give my 'maids the color from each site, and let them have final say on fabric, price, and style of their dress? Does that sound insane? I ran it by my girls and they all seem to be on board with it! Ideally we'd end up with a mix of fabrics and silhouettes and it will still look mismatched but intentional.

Thoughts? Concerns? Other suggestions? What have you all done in the past when going for a mismatched look, especially when your bridesmaids have different budgets?

I think your idea is awesome! You already have swatches from each of the designers, so you know exactly what colors you like together, so no surprise there. And you are also already familiar with and like all the fabrics and styles of dresses available on each site. I think this is a great idea! You know you will get the dresses you like, and the colors you prefer, and are giving your BM‘s tons of options for styles and price points that work for them.

So my girls got their dresses from various websites and i only really said somewhere along the lines of blush pink. and you know what? SURPRISINGLY in photos the colors looked pretty close together somehow even though it was all different designs and shades and brands.

so i think in the end, yours will look cohesive too. because even though i wanted to give my girls the freedom of choosing, i was also nervous about it looking like it would clash but i was pleasantly surprised to see it worked out well.

Okay, phew. This is so reassuring! Thank you!! It felt like a great compromise to me, but I wanted to run it by literally anyone else to check 😅

Bridesmaid dresses - same color from different websites? 5So this is literally exactly what I did. I chose rose gold sequined as my fabric. I then went and chose actual dresses from Azazie, Amazon and Etsy in this fabric and asked my 8 girls to select from a bunch of choices I had narrowed down. Dresses ranged from $80 to $200. Three girls actually ended up finding dresses they liked better from the designers than the ones I designated (and I didn’t care), so in hindsight I should have just given them the links to the designer pages just like you’re doing! It worked out really well, the dresses were nicely mismatched but coordinated and everyone found something they loved in their budget.

Those look SO GOOD. Wow it is so reassuring to know a couple of you have done this! I don't personally know anyone who has gone this particular route for dresses, and wasn't sure if it would be more trouble than it's worth. But it sounds like it's worked out well for a couple of you, woo!

This is so funny because I'm going thru the same exact thing right now but with a dusty rose color palette. Ordered swatches from Azazie, Birdy Grey and Revelry and liked different things about each. I am going to do the same thing you are and give my girls the websites and color options and have them pick based on what they like and their budget. I think all your swatches look great together and seeing everyone else's examples make me more confident that this is a good route to take!

How did it all turn out? Thinking of doing the same thing with dusty blue, and would love to see a photo!
