Bridesmaid dress troubles

Tracy, on May 20, 2021 at 10:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13
Okay so I’ve been struggling so hard with my bridesmaids dresses. Ive made multiple decisions and took them back (before purchases were made). I know I want velvet but the color is what I’m struggling with. Recently I had most of my girls buy a dress that I thought would be perfect and I could put this part of wedding planning behind me. Well it is not the same color as the photo. I’m not wanting brown bridesmaids but I’m wanting rust fall vibes for my wedding. The dress looks much more brown than the rust red I was expecting. I can’t make them all return the dress I feel. Is it awful? I just am not in love, is that normal? Am I just over thinking? Thank you for any help!Bridesmaid dress troubles 1

I like the color. It does look very brown in the photos from “online” and in person but it’s a beautiful dress!

That’s a beautiful dress actually. You’re not terrible for having a specific image- it’s how you manage it. Just be reasonable and patient with yourself and your bridesmaids.
On the topic of how nice that dress is... could you give them flowers to hold and maybe jewelry and shoes in a rust-red color? The velvet still makes the brown very warm and fall-like.

Thank you for your response! I was planning on greenery bouquets but I guess I could add in some burgundy’s or copper like flowers as well if need be. I’m trying to work my mind into being more open with the dress so I appreciate the suggestions on how to make that happen!

I think it's definitely unique and pretty! However... if you can't get past the colour, could you get dresses you prefer yourself? Or ask if YOU can return them, with their receipts?

I think that dress is gorgeous! But it's important that you love it too. However, I think it's a lot to ask bridesmaids to return the dresses and order new ones. It may be polite to offer to pay any extra fees they may incur and to return the dresses yourself personally.

I just happened to be on the Baltic Born website and noticed they have swatches you can order if you decide to return the ones you have. That way if you exchange them you can at least make sure you love the color before going through all the effort!

In my opinion, it doesn't look really any different in person than online. Both look very brown, but I think it's the velvet making it more brown than rust color. Since you are unhappy with them you could ask the girls to return them, but make sure you order swatches next time to make sure you actually like the color before they purchase a new dress.

I agree the dress is pretty and fits the vision even if it's not the exact color you had in mind. definitely add some pretty red and orange flowers to the greenery bouquet and it will look fantastic!

When I saw the dress hanging I thought I was going to hate it, but wow does it look beautiful on those girls !! It’s a unique color, and it’s definitely fall vibes, I don’t even know what I would call it but it looks rich and earthy Smiley winking. A agree with a thoughtfully chosen bouquet you’ll land right in line with your vision.

Also. Talk to your photographer about it. If they knows what you were hoping for color wise, they can keep that in mind when editing , so that the pictures align best with your vision. The dress looks like one that will look a little different in every light!

The color does look slightly redder in the picture online so I understand why you were disappointed. That being said, it really isn't that far off from the original and does looks 'rust' color to me. It is a beautiful dress, from a design standpoint.

Have you picked a metallic accent yet? If you are going with bronze, copper, or gold you can have the girls wear jewelry in that metal/color that helps bring out the feel you are trying to achieve. I also agree that some red tones in the bouquet may help you feel happier with the overall look. Burgundy, red, or a dark orange would all work as accent colors.

Agree with this. They look like the color. Make sure to order swatches or see the dresses in person at a local shop before you buy.

The only photo that looks really brown is the one that is super backlit (so the photo exposure is off). I think the color looks really pretty in the full length photo of the girl wearing it in a house, and the photos of it hanging on a hanger look similar.

Whatever sort of processing/editing your photographer will also impact how the color looks in your photos. If you are using a photographer with a "light and airy high key" style the dress will likely look a bit softer and more muted/dull in color, whereas if they use richer and more saturated tones it will likely look a bit more red/rusty with warmer, richer undertones. Light and time of day will also impact the color as well - if you do late day, sunset or "golden hour" shots the dresses will have a beautiful rusty warm hue to them, but they'll likely look browner during noon-midday light or in overcast conditions. Light will ALWAYS impact color, so you will never find a fabric that looks exactly the same indoors and outdoors and at all times of day.

I feel like many brides get stuck on finding a very specific color, but the reality is that the color you see when you look at a dress on a mannequin or a swatch of fabric will appear different based on factors you typically cannot 100% control. So the "perfect" color is really a myth; find something that fits your vision closely but don't get stuck on it being exactly right, because you'll never be satisfied if you are trying to meet an impossible goal. Before giving up on these dresses, bring them outside and snap a few photos at sunrise or sunset, have your maids try them on on a sunny day, or even try snapping photos with some different cameras/phones.
