Bridesmaid Dress Headache

Amber, on August 9, 2023 at 1:04 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 25

Hi there! I am currently beginning to shop for my BMs dresses and am having a difficult time finding the styles and colors that we like. I recently went to David's Bridal with my MOH ( My BMs are scattered across the country) to see what dresses look like on & they are out of the liked styles & sizes in the color needed. They explained that there is an inventory problem and they don't see these colors/styles being replenished. Ugh. I considered changing their dress color however apparently that will not be a solution to the problem. ( I'm having a black tie, summer wedding and there are not many summer color choices to choose from) I also asked the rep that was assisting us when new colors are released and she was not able to give me an answer.

I have ordered swatches from companies like Birdy Grey and Revelry however online I read mixed reviews and feeling uneasy about trying the online only stores out.

We are still 1 year away until the wedding, so I get it that we still have time to figure it out. I am just a bit concerned that I am maybe overlooking a better dress company that wouldn't give us this headache.

Has anyone experienced this? Any advice or input on how to resolve this issue?

We didn't use them because I got objections from bridesmaids about ordering online but I've heard great things about Azazie.

I've personally ordered from Revelry, Azazie and BHLDN when I was a BM in friends' weddings. I've had good experiences with all 3 companies! Revelry and BHLDN were higher quality dresses, but Azazie wasn't terrible by any means. The one drawback to Revelry was the turnaround time - it took quite awhile for them to fulfill and ship our dresses. So if you go that route, definitely make sure you leave plenty of extra time. BHLDN and Azazie shipped our dresses quickly. Azazie has a "try before you buy" option, which was super helpful! In that particular wedding, we were allowed to choose any dress we wanted within a certain color range, so I ordered several options to try (I think it only cost like $10/dress to try them).

I second the Azazie suggestion. Although I ultimately went with a wedding dress elsewhere, their try before you buy offering is super easy and convenient!

I would look online at stores that have a "try on at home" option, like Azazie. David's bridal is having some problems, and it might be affecting their supply chain.

David’s is permanently closed in many locations. The ones that are open are clearing the racks and not taking new orders beyond that. Never heard any bad reviews about Revelry, Azazie or Cocomelody. My bridesmaids used a mix of them depending on the style and price range they preferred.

Yeah, David’s Bridal is going through bankruptcy proceedings right now, so I definitely wouldn’t trust them. I’m addition to Azazie and Birdy Grey, Kennedy Blue is similar. My bridesmaids got their dresses there, and they both really like them. Azazie does custom sizing for free, which reduces alteration costs. Lulu’s also has bridesmaid dresses. I ordered my reception dress from them and LOVE it.

My BMs got their dresses from Avery Austin. I think the dresses look great and came quickly. You can order them for try on at home before buying.

OHHH, I was totally unaware DB's is going through a BK. This all makes wayyy more sense now. I am also looking for a lower cost route for a reception dress and was considering a dress on Lulu's... maybe I will order it after all. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, David's filed for bankruptcy in February. They closed a good portion of their stores at the end of June. They did find a buyer in the beginning of July, but there is still a lot to work out, so there may still be more closures before it all settles down.

I personally would steer clear of them right now.

I let my bridesmaids choose their own dresses along the lines of my wedding color. They just have to show me what it looks like first. I'm ok with them wearing different dresses too. And I'm giving them a $100 budget.

I know so many brides and even myself that used David’s Bridal for bridesmaid dresses! Unfortunately this spring they announced bankruptcy, some locations have already closed, and some are remaining open but I can see how this may affect inventory and lead some uncertainty for new or current stock! I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. One of the reasons I chose David’s too was because they have stores all over the country and it was easy for my out of town bridesmaids to go to their local stores too and select their dresses.

I’ve heard really great things about some of the online options, I think they either have the option to meet in person at a place for everyone to get measured or they offer guidance for how to measure at home and order a size based on that.
I think compiling some online options or considering that is a great alternative if David’s is discouraging at the moment. You definitely have some time to figure out options. I’d take a deep breath and hopefully other ladies can offer their insight on where they picked for bridesmaid dresses too!

I definitely agree with you and will not be going with David's. It's a shame that this is happening since they are a national brick and mortar. It really would have made the BMs dress shopping a whole lot more convenient. Oh well, at least I found this out now and not closer to the wedding.

I went with JJ's House and the dresses are great! Very true to size and they have soooooo many color options and styles to choose from for affordable pricing. You can order color swatches from them and they have a try on at home option.

Ooh, I was just going to ask about JJ’s House. That’s who we plan to order BM dresses from. They have the colors I want. Thanks!

I think you'll be pleased! I would very highly recommend spending the extra $20 for custom sizing. Unless you have a trusted alterations person already. I had never had anything altered in my life and am less than happy with the service I received from the place I went. I ordered my wedding dress from Hebeos and I absolutely love it, it's gorgeous, I'm so excited to wear it in three weeks! But my one regret is not doing the custom sizing for an extra $20. It would have saved me a lot of money to only need to get a bustle done. On a good note, I still spent less than the cheapest, unaltered dress through David's Bridal so there's that! And it's exactly what I want!

I don't know if Azazie has formal enough options, but I've been looking there. We're doing more of a late spring garden type wedding, but I've been very impressed with the options they have. It's online, so bridesmaids from all over shouldn't have any issues. You can order swatches and see the different fabric types as well as colors. They also let you order a few to try before ordering. Just a thought

Depending on where your bridesmaids live I'd look for something that they can order locally through a bridal store or boutique in their area or I'd give them general guidance to go with a popular color or range of colors in a style of their choice. To me, that's more convenient than ordering online.

Do a search on the forum for them because they are hit or miss. They are a company based in China so that is a red flag to some. Some brides have mentioned that they get what they expected and others said it was a ripoff. Those who were happy with what they received were unable to find local seamstresses willing to work on the dresses. Keep that in mind, as well as for any unpopular company which may be a knock off with bad reviews from the BBB and other sites.
