Booking a seamstress before dress arrives

Caytlyn, on August 14, 2019 at 2:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
So my dress is set to arrive in September for my November wedding. Obviously that’s already cutting it close for alterations so I don’t want to wait until it arrives to make appointments. Did anyone else book their alterations before their dress was delivered? Does that seem like the best course of action?

Haha well I did, and then I had to cancel because my dress came in the wrong color 🤦🏻‍♀️. Still, I absolutely would recommend it as the best course of action, as long as you can cancel without penalty. I had done a lot of research and felt like I found the best seamstress option and she booked up fast! My replacement dress came in quickly but there was too much guess work with the second arrival that I couldn’t rebook, and missed my shot at that seamstress— so I think it is wise to have something on the schedule if possible! Squeezing in to a last minute seamstress once my dress came in left me in a bit of a pinch (fewer options, more compromising), and I ended up spending a lot more money than I think I otherwise would’ve needed to, to go with the woman that could squeeze me in after I reached out once my dress came in. I mean, she did good work, and was easily able to work with my timeline and eliminate a lot of stress for me there, but with the “last minute”-ness of it all, I felt backed into a corner financially.

I don't think it could hurt to have them pencil you in for it! You may not being able to give exact details about what alterations will need done but a general idea of "I'll need it bustled, hemmed and cups added" or something should be enough to get somebody on board.

We booked our seamstress early. She's known for being both excellent and affordable, and we wanted to make sure she wasn't all booked up before we called. Obviously, the dress has to be there for the first fitting, but it doesn't have to be there before you make the appointment.

    Hey Caytlyn!

I agree that this could be the best course of action when you will be faced with such a tight turnaround.

Do you have any idea yet how much alterations your dress will require?

In my experience, the seamstress got me in very quickly and finished the alterations within a couple of weeks. It definitely wouldn't hurt to call beforehand. Do you know what the extent of the alterations will be? I know people that have quoted out a few different seamstresses, so I'm not sure if you might want to try that.
