Black/latino bridal hair northern nj

Storm, on October 16, 2019 at 4:16 PM Posted in New Jersey Planning 2 15

Help! I'm having trouble finding someone who can handle doing natural hair (open to curly and straight styles) and my wedding is less than a month away! Suggestions please!

    Hey there, Storm!

Have you checked out the WeddingWire vendor directory as part of your search?

Northern New Jersey Wedding Hair & Makeup

Southern New Jersey Wedding Hair & Makeup

It may save you a ton of time to reach out the different HMUA's via their WeddingWire profile with a generic email asking about their experience with natural hair.

You can also browse pictures of their previous work on their profile and find some this way.

Are you from the area? Do you have a regular salon you attend that could help?

    Hi Cliodhna!

I see you are an admin - thanks for replying, this actually will give a great opportunity to let you know that yes, I have looked through the vendor directory. And to be honest, your director is very white-woman oriented. Every vendor I've seen has pictures of white woman after white woman all with shiny, straight, white-person hair. Looking at that, I can tell that none of those vendors can handle my hair.

For WoC, it would be helpful to actually have a tag for hair and make-up artists who are capable of working with WoC.

    Hey Storm!

Firstly, I totally agree with you. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be searching for a hair stylist.

We actively encourage our vendors to include diverse images of their work on their WeddingWire page (and their own website!).

I went through the different hairstylists on that list and pulled all who had pictures of their work with women of color. I think you should look into the following:

    Glamorous by Juanita

    GawJess Brides

    Logan Greenwood

    Beauty From Inside & Out

    217 Beauty

Another great place to check out is Munaluchi Bridal. Have you ever heard of it? It’s a resource for multicultural weddings, and vendors. There is only one hairstylist listed in New Jersey (The Mane Loft), however, there are a couple more in New York which may work for you.

I agree with this. I have no idea what kind of hair style I want to do mostly because I sweat easily and finding a vendor that knows how to handle this type of hair is really difficult.

Are you looking for someone that will come to you? Or are you willing to book the firs appt of the day and go to them?

Thank you for all of these suggestions - this was very helpful!

Just so you know - if a hairstylist isn't displaying people with multiple textures it's not for lack of trying, it's bc that's not their clientele. Nothing wrong with that, but for future brides, a label that signifies that they can do textured/kinky hair would be helpful

I never thought about tags, but I’m sure they are helpful as a search tool. Kudos on suggesting it.

Goodness, I'm so glad this thread exists! The one thing I'm concerned about when considering a destination wedding (or even engagement photos abroad) is finding a stylist and makeup artist that works with WoC! Thank you ladies, for the resources you've provided. I hope others chime in the grow the list. I will be following!
