Best friend doing my wedding makeup - need advice/opinions

April, on December 14, 2019 at 2:14 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 16
Hello all,

Many months ago, my best friend, who has a background in beauty (was a makeup artist at Macy’s and Nordstrom, now embarking on event and wedding makeup business but is in beginning stages) offered to do my makeup for my wedding. We had an informal trial a little over a month ago and i was a little bit torn. It was more dramatic than I liked and I didn’t feel like the eye makeup was blended enough. Because it was impromptu and she wasn’t fully prepared, she didn’t do lashes, so disregard that. But can you all just take a look at the pics and let me know what you think?? I know I have bride brain right now and I’m probably stressing over nothing, I just really want to look and feel my best on the day of my wedding and I’m nervous that now I’ve put myself in a very awkward situation given she’s my best friend and I don’t want to hurt her feelings 😬😬 Thank you!Best friend doing my wedding makeup - need advice/opinions 1Best friend doing my wedding makeup - need advice/opinions 2

Looks natural but did the foundation last? I agree about the blending and maybe lighter shadow on the lids if you feel it’s too dramatic.

I think it looks very pretty and natural when you have your eyes open. I do see what you mean with the blend though. Maybe talk to her, have a second trial even, and see if she can go lighter? I feel like they are very dark colors for bridal makeup.

Ok I am totally untrained in makeup but I think your face looks beautiful! In fact, I was immediately drawn to your eyes!! Anyway, i would text her and say hey I was thinking about the makeup and loved xxx, but could we try something different with the eye. Blame your obsessive bide brain lol. Its a great excuse. I really think she’ll “get it” and want you to be 100% happy. Good luck!

I love the lip color. She is your best friend and I know you don’t want to hurt her feelings. I would just say I loved what you did but it’s just not the look I’m going for. Tell her you want a lighter more natural looking eye shadow, maybe show her some inspiration of what you like on Pinterest.

I agree it looks pretty great when your eyes are open, but if definitely go with a lighter eye color. And maybe see if she can give your eyebrows a bit of a arch, I think it would define your face more than having them so round. She should see this as a great learning experience. If you aren't honest with her, then a client will be and they might not be so nice.

Thank you! I agree about the brows. I am debating getting my brows microbladed sometime on the next few weeks because I have a two week break from work at Xmas and I’ve heard the healing process is awkward 😬

That’s a good question. It did last but I wasn’t really sweating or doing anything crazy. It was just a liquid foundation with a powder on top. Does airbrush makeup last longer?

You are soo gorgeous!! I do agree a bit that the eyes need to be blended a bit more, but I actually think the dark, dramatic color on you makes your eyes pop. However idk if the lip color necessarily fits because it is more natural and pinkish. But if you go lighter on the eye color then the lip color is perfect!

Ok. Yes, it looks like a fairly sheer coverage. You appear to have nice skin so heavy coverage isn’t needed. But maybe a medium coverage to get thru the wedding day. Airbrush can last with the right techniques and products. But it also has some cons, where once it’s on there’s no quick fixing it later. So sometimes it’s not the best when it comes to tears or if you touch it and get fingerprints or things like that. But it’s still good yet not on dry skin. However liquid and cream foundations are just as good if they’re pro brands.

I think it looks very natural. It can often feel glam or heavy in person but looks right in photos. I agree with you that the eye shadow can be blended more. Did she use an eyelid primer? I find if I don't use one it's hard for me to get soft blending.
And last.... those are your eyelashes?? They look amazing!

Totally agree with Kirsten! Heavier makeup photographs beautifully.

I might be a bit biased about the look since it's fairly similar to my own bridal trial makeup. Smiley smile

Did you have any particular inspo pictures/a look you were going for?

I think its beautiful! I do agree the eyes are a little dramatic - they look amazing and not too over the top but if it's not the look you are going for then it's not right for you. You could definitely ask her to go softer on the eyes - I think that would be an easy enough fix. It overall does look really pretty and I'd be quite happy with this look with softer eyes (I think you and I probably want a very similar style of bridal makeup).

Okay so eyes open it looks very pretty and natural but with eyes close the eye shadow does look a bit harsh. I think your right in that it just needs to be blended more or maybe even use warmer tones rather than darker tones. I would say just do another trial and let her know after looking over the photos your thinking of going a little lighter on eye shadow. I'm sure she'll understand and after all you want to be comfortable on your wedding day.

I think you look beautiful! I'd just tell her to use lighter, less dramatic color on your eyes if you prefer a more natural look. I'd also try to have a second trial to make sure you are happy, and make sure it lasts several hours.

I think it looks great! 100% agree that the eyeshadow could use a little blending. I'd definitely tell her you prefer a more natural look if the eyeshadow feels too dark for you. Personally I think it looks great though and for pictures, a little darker than you'd usually do looks best
