Best dress styles for a bigger-up-top bride?

katiekies, on February 19, 2022 at 11:51 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 8

I'm super nervous about shopping for a wedding dress. I've always been on the chubby side, and never been a confident clothes shopper because of it ... although, I have been losing weight since starting my new job (yay for more movement!). I know dresses exist for my size - 16 / XL, last I checked - as I've been perusing the David's Bridal website recently.

My biggest concern is that bras have always been my biggest challenge - I think I'm an H, if that gives you a clearer picture of what I'm working with. I feel very limited in what styles I can wear, and whether or not I can even find a good bra. I'm sure I won't find a supportive-enough strapless bra, so then I have to worry about straps showing ...

But I'm trying to remind myself that I'm not the ONLY big-up-top bride, and maybe I'm just overthinking this? I'm curious about the styles that would be best-suited for someone with my body type.

I worked in bridal for three years. I would recommend a dress with more structure on the top- something with boning, an internal corset or corset back I think would definitely help you feel more secure. Alterations are a game changer- for brides with a particularly large bust, sometimes a bra can be sewn straight into the dress, so then the straps of the dress hold up the bra and the bra straps can be tucked in or cut off. Sizing in bridal actually tends to be way more inclusive than street size, and I have no doubt that you’ll be able to find a gorgeous gown in that size.

Thank you for the encouraging words Lydia Smiley heart It does make me feel better even just now knowing that bridal sizing is more inclusive! And I made an appointment with David's Bridal, so hopefully I'll have someone helping me on shopping day with my concerns.

I never considered a corset-style back though - now that you say it, it does sound like a supportive/secure option. I'll be open to it when I start shopping!

You'll find a beautiful dress and undergarments that add support. I wore a bustier under my dress (32DD (E depending on where you're from)) and had plenty of support all night.

Hi Katie! I'm an I cup so I was really worried about this too! To be honest 90% of the dresses I tried on were very supportive. The dress I chose had boning like a previous poster said and I went bra free on the big day. The only thing I would tell you to do is to check the boning while sitting down. I didn't and I must slouch pretty badly because the boning bent under the weight and I had a little crease in my dress after dinner. Nobody noticed but now I do when I look at the pictures. Otherwise I felt very supported all night.

I’m in the same predicament I’m a 32 double F but I managed to find a sweetheart neckline fit and flare dress that really minimize the impact of my boobs.Best dress styles for a bigger-up-top bride? 1

Omg, bra-free is the dream!!! ... is that sad? lol

Thank you for the tip about sitting down in the dress - I think I would've forgotten that at my appointment, so I will definitely keep that in mind now when I go.

Not sad at all- that is the dream! I was so excited haha. No problem! Someone told me to do it when I tried on dresses and I did but didn't think much of it or that I would need to have extended sitting once the dress was altered! But best of luck to you finding the dress and congrats on your upcoming wedding!
