Balloons in the wedding...Awesome or Tacky

Kelly, on August 5, 2015 at 5:50 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 27

Thinking about adding some balloons. See attached pictures. They will be Red, and I want them as large as this. I really like how they are coming up from the table. I don't want it to just be me blowing up a dozen balloons, but, I like how they look with the large ones.

Thoughts?

Yay or Nay?

My personal opinion is that they are super cute. If your event isn't super formal, I say go for it!

Not my favorite, but also, not my wedding. I don't think they look tacky, just not my style.

Seems difficult to pull off logistically. What if they pop or blow around?

Don't love, but it's not my wedding.

My first impression of balloons at a wedding is ughhh, but I actually love the photos. It would definitely add some whimsy to the reception, but just make sure that's what your going for. If you want 'classical elegance' or something I don't think balloons of any kind work, even those pictured.

Totally not my style, but those photos are very elegant and pretty! If you like the look of them, go for it!

The pictures are fun! Just make sure you get nice, event balloons (it's really a thing, I looked at buying some) and anchor them well. You can buy the fancier strings on Etsy as well as some party supply websites.

Not really my style personally, but if you aren't having a very formal wedding then I think they would be fine. But if you want them to float like that you are going to need them filled with helium, blowing them up yourself they won't float.

I used to decorate a lot with balloons (my bosses were known for it) and we did a bunch of weddings with things like these. We called them illusions, they are a 3' latex balloon and usually secured with fishing line and had ribbons hanging down so they looked like they were floating over the table. They can be secured to a flower arrangement or a nice decorated weight. I do not suggest doing these yourself. 3' balloons are a bitch to tie, even for a professional, have to be inflated directly off the tank (no regulator) and hurt if you pop them while holding. Look around for balloon decorating companies in your area, they should be able to do these no problem for you. If I knew where you were located I might even be able to suggest a pro.

I think balloons are for birthday parties and prom. I have seen some covered in tulle that would look super cute at a shower but I wouldnt use them for a wedding.

First of all, those balloons are not filled with carbon dioxide (the majority of what they would contain if you blew them up). If you blew them up, they'd flop on the table. You need to go to the dollar store and have them filled with helium if you expect them to float. Balloons are a great way to decorate birthday parties. Weddings? Nope. If I have a choice between awesome or tacky...well, let's put it this way -- I'm not going with awesome.

Ehh...screams kid's birthday party to me unless overall your decor is very whimsical.

I'm not a fan of incorporating balloons into the table decor, though I'm not necessarily opposed to balloons

I think this idea would be better for like a spring time shower rather than a wedding.

    Edit: spelling

I didn't think I liked balloons for a wedding until I saw this picture. Putting tulle on them like this makes them more wedding-like. If I had time, energy, and money to get a helium tank and stuff I would do it!

I like balloons for a less formal wedding- but they would have to be something special- like the extra large ones, glitter on them, etc. normal balloons or for a formal wedding-no.

Something to be aware of with balloons is anyone you may be inviting that has been in the military/has PTSD. Some combat veterans have PTSD that is triggered by a popped balloon (sounds like a gunshot). Even though they are gorgeous balloons, it is inevitable that at least one will be popped.
