Ballgown for a beach wedding?

Alyssa, on April 20, 2019 at 8:24 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18
Hi guys!
So I bought this huge poofy ballgown of my dreams before my fiancé told me he’d really like to have a beach ceremony somewhere tropical. It’s just an idea at the moment- but if we were to get married on the beach- do you think it would be a possibility to wear this dress? I would take out a few layers for sure.

That dress is beautiful! I think you could make it work, but you'd either have to bustle or remove the train so it's not dragging through sand. Taking out a few layers from the skirt will help, but just make sure you're not losing what you love about the dress! Talk to a seamstress about alteration options and find out pricing before you make any decisions- it could get pricy!

It is your day and tog can wear whatever you want! A big part of my choice for my dress was that it fit the vibe of the wedding since I am personally about everything tying together.

The one thing you want to keep in mind is how moveable the dress is. Walking through sand is tough on a normal day in a bathing suit so if your dress has a lot of weight to it, you will be doing a lot to get around.

I also second what the previous person said about taking out the poof. People do not buy ballgoen dresses for anything other than the poof and feeling like a princess so if you take out layers and it loses the poofiness, then that defeats the purpose of a ballgown. It also might be pricey too.

What I would do is take the money you would put into alterations and buy a simpler dress for the ceremony. If your reception is not on the beach, then you change into this dress for the reception. This way you get the ease and comfort for the ceremony, but the dress of your dreams to party in at the reception.

    Hi there Alyssa!

    Firstly, your dress is beautiful!!

You could certainly work with the dress you have if you love it and really want to wear it. Once you decide where you will be getting married, and if it is on a beach, take it to a seamstress and see what can be done to make it a little easier for you to wear on the day. If it's going to be super humid, taking some layers out may not be a bad idea (as long as it doesn't change anything you love about the dress!).

If you had the budget, you could always get a lighter dress to change in to later in the day after the ceremony, so you can dance the night away without any dress restrictions!

What do you love about this dress specifically?

My dress is similar to yours in size and i am getting married on the beach with a rain location of being indoors instead. It will work perfectly for both beach and non beach. All that matters is you feel comfortable in your dress.

You can absolutely wear it for a beach wedding. Your only issue might be the train and it dragging through the sand might make the dress feel heavy and could be uncomfortable. Any good seamstress can give you ideas of how to alter it to make it work better for you.

You can wear whatever dress you’d like. But keep in mind with sand comes seaweed and rocks and lots of other treasures from the sea. And potentially wind and heat.

I wore this dress with sandals.

I'm getting married on the beach and I'm wearing a ballgown, it's very light material so it's not heavy at all. I say wear it if you want to, it's your day!

I think if you take the underlayers of tulle out to make it less poofy it'll work beautifully. But since ya'll are undecided wait for any alterations until you know for sure. Gorgeous dress!

It's your wedding, rock it if you love it!!! I think that with removing some layers and taking the train up or bustling it, it will work fine on the beach! You would hate to decide not to wear a dress you love just because of the location!

Your dress is gorgeous! You can honestly wear whatever you like no matter the location. I think you can definitely make it work. Taking out layers like you mentioned will definitely make the dress a bit easier to manage the walk, especially in the sand.

I live at the beach. You would need to bustle it for the whole ceremony. Otherwise, you will be dragging sand, bugs, rocks, sticks, etc. Trust me, you don't want to wear heels or fancy shoes of any kind. Cute sandals, "barefoot sandals", or barefoot would be the best options. Possibly have the hemline raised just slightly so it doesn't drag in the front and trip you. You can have a runner to walk on, but it will sink into the sand with every step your wedding party takes on it. By the time you walk it might not be a lot of help, so keeping the wedding party small could be a good idea... or have them reset the runner before you walk.

Maybe you can find a venue out on a pier so you can be surrounded by the ocean and beach without having to drag your dress through the sand.

Go for it! I think taking out a few layers to make it more comfortable for you is a great idea but ultimately, it's your day and wear what you want!
