Auctioning off the garter

Shelby, on January 3, 2016 at 10:50 PM Posted in South Dakota Planning 0 28

So my FH just told me it is commonplace around here (central South Dakota) to auction off the garter and that he wants to do it at our wedding. He was kind of shocked when I gave him a look of horror and vehemently told him that we will NOT be doing that as I feel it is kind of tacky especially since we are having a destination wedding! No way am I doing that when people have already paid so much to even attend!

So my question is, do people in other parts of the country do this?! And do you think it is as tacky as I do?

I've seen it done (Iowa), but I see auctioning off the first dance in the dollar dance far more often here. I know, I know....hot topic. :-) lol

Lol, here they toss the garter. It's like the bouquet toss for the bride. The guy who catches the garter is the one who will be married next. And from what I gather, you don't toss the one that the bride was wearing.

Tori, I always thought the garter toss was tradition everywhere(the one you referred to, not the auction), but now I'm Curious.

The bride usually wears two garters, one to toss and a fancier one to keep.

I agree with Nicole.. I've always heard the bride wears 2 garters (and if they are doing the garter toss, then one is removed to be tossed).

Lol where I am from the dollar dance is very common and I have only seen 1 garter auction and that's cause the groom was an auctioneer.

I've never heard of auctioning the garter belt. My FH is horrified at the idea of a garter toss, so we probably won't be doing one. His words: I'm not throwing ANYTHING that's been on your thigh to a bunch of other men. *sigh*

We really wanted to do a bouquet and garter toss, but neither of us have too many friends that aren't married anymore, so we might do the dance where the couple that has been married the longest gets recognition, and give them the bouquet and garter. I'm not sure yet though. We do want to have something of that tradition though.

Me too Staci! OP - never heard of this, and I agree with you that it's super tacky. The toss, yes totally fine. The auction?? Noooo.

Never heard of it either. We are skipping both tosses. There just won't be that many single people at our wedding.
