As a guest, how do you keep cool at a formal, outdoor wedding?

While keeping more modest? Current maxi styles are backless halters or have cut-outs. Short dresses with sleeves could be an option, but then you stick to the seat.

And what goes with block heels other than pants?

Asking for a friend who will attend an outdoor, grassy, Greece wedding during its hottest months.

Formal and outdoors don’t typically coexist. Same for short and formal. But lightweight breathable fabrics are your best bet. Something such as crepe or chiffon has more airflow than satin or velvet. Browse dresses on Azazie.com or at a local department store.

Anything can be worn with block heels. Also, a dressy top and pants are acceptable as a guest if you are not into dresses.

I agree with you, formal and outdoors is confusing. They didn't specify dress except for noting grass, but it is an evening wedding in Europe so I estimate more elegant than a sun dress, lighter fabrics than my dark, cocktail attire. Perhaps a colored jumpsuit and jacket, wedges, and a fan in hand. Thanks for the Azazie tip if I do buy something new.

We allowed our guests to be slightly less casual at our event, which was outdoors in Mexico in a tropical setting. My dad wore a dressy short sleeve button-up (a "cubavera"), and our groomsmen had suspenders (but no jackets). My husband took his jacket off right after the ceremony and rolled up his sleeves. We encouraged guests to wear for huaraches (dressy woven sandals for men or women) and to wear cotton/linen blends. We also set folding fans out on the ceremony seats. I would bring one of those handheld battery-powered mister/fans if you can! And stick to cotton/linen blends that breathe, and some dressy sandals.

Thank you for your ideas. You've also inspired me to look at local dress. While I can't wear the Greek toga or one strap style so common this spring (larger bust), another option might be an evening kaftan from the African side of the Mediterranean. I haven't yet been able to afford a silk version, but maybe this might be the right occasion.

If you have to worry about keeping your guests cool, you shouldn't be having an outdoor wedding. Your guests comfort is way more important than what you want as the bride. I'd suggest a wedding during a more favorable season, or indoors. Or you could have it poolside and recommend guests wear bathing suits

I agree. My friend and his bride tried their best providing ample drinks and food at an off the water location with tree shade. Unfortunately, Greece was so hot this summer even for locals. Some wedding guests got heat sick and left early. Of course no one would tell the hosts why.
