Are ushers really necessary?

Jasmine S., on February 11, 2022 at 8:17 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 6
My wedding is 3 months away and we're looking more closely at our ceremony. My mom wants us to designate ushers and I'm wondering if that's really necessary. We don't have any groomsmen, so I'm not sure who could do this. We also wouldn't want to burden those people by asking them to arrive early (especially since the family may still be taking portraits 30+ minutes before). It will be about 150 to 160 guests. We will put reserved signs on the front row. Other than that, we don't care who sits where. Any thoughts?

Ushers are not necessary, people know how to find seats for themselves. Just make sure you have more than enough seating because people will leave gaps.

I have literally never been to a wedding with ushers. They are not necessary and, if it wasn't for wedding wire, I would have assumed they just were not a thing anymore.

I just posted about this a few days ago and was wondering the same thing. I know it's traditional so that's why your mom suggested it. We decided to not have ushers at our upcoming wedding since we don't have programs to pass out and we want people to sit wherever they like. I am putting 'reserved' signs on the 2 front rows for our immediate families. I'm also going to tell those family members (parents, aunt/uncles) that those seats are reserved for them so they don't sit elsewhere. I think it will be fine.

Like everyone else said, it's not necessary at all! I've never been to a wedding that had one, and I like it when guests are able to choose their own seat and side to sit on.

Definitely not necessary. Guests have been to weddings before, and they know how they work. I think ushers are becoming a thing of the past anyway. I remember seeing ushers at weddings when I was very young, but haven’t seen them at recent weddings for quite some time.
