things I have on the agenda

- Glow worm caves

- hobbiton

- lord of the rings hikes

- hot spring beach (up on north part of the island)

- Maori cultural experiences

But we will be there for a while. I need more stuff! Any suggestions?

Kiwi here! Have you booked flights yet, and if so, are you flying in and out of Auckland? And are you planning to rent a car? With two weeks, I would do:

Day 1: fly in, check into hotel, explore central Auckland and get over jetlag.

Day 2: Waiheke Island (catch the ferry) for winery tour

Day 3: Pick up rental car and drive to the Coromandel Peninsula. Visit the Kauerangi Visitor Centre and do a hike or two from there. Stay in the Thames area.

Day 4: Drive up the western side of the peninsula (spectacular drive) to Coromandel Town, which is a very funky little town with quite a lot to see and do. Well worth a visit is the Driving Creek Railway. Stay somewhere in that area. Also the fish and chip shop in Coromandel Town is excellent!

Day 5: Over to Whitianga, Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach - you'll have no trouble spending a day doing those three things. Hot Water Beach is very tide-dependent - it's only any good two hours of low tide so be sure to check the tide tables. Cathedral Cove is a half-hour walk from the road end but it's a nice hike and a beautiful bay at the end of it. They do also do jet boat tours and kayak tours from Hahei. Stay in the Hahei or Hot Water Beach area.

Day 6: Head down to Rotorua for hot springs and Maori cultural experiences. So much to see and do there. Go via Matamata to visit Hobbiton - it's not quite on the way but not far out of the way either.

    Day 7: Rotorua

    Day 8: Rotorua

Day 9: Back to Auckland via Waitomo for glow worm caves. Return rental car.

Day 10: Fly to Queenstown. Q'town is the adventure capital of NZ and also a lot of LOTR was filmed in the area. The gondola is fun and the luge track at the top station is awesome!

Day 11: LOTR stuff - I'd suggest visiting Glenorchy, a small town at the head of the lake, where there's loads of hiking and several LOTR locations. Skippers Canyon (don't self-drive, it's one of the roads they bar rental cars from driving on plus it's terrifying) is also worth a visit and was a filming location.

Day 12: Wineries in the Queenstown area - Central Otago is noted for its pinot noir and there are stacks of wineries in the vicinity.

Day 13: Queenstown, or a day trip to Arrowtown which is a nice smaller town not too far away.

Day 14: Fly back to Auckland and out.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!

I went for 3 weeks when I was in college, but only visited the South Island. Some of the places that stuck out for me was Punakaiki (Pancake Rocks), one of the glaciers (I can't remember if it was Franz Josef or Fox), Fiorland National Park, and Lake Matheson. It's such a beautiful place with so much to do, you will be so happy with this destination! Smiley heart

This sounds like so much fun, Pattie. New Zealand looks so beautiful. I love the travel website Lonely Planet, you should read some of their guides - New Zealand.
