Anyone have/rented a timeshare?

Melissa, on August 31, 2016 at 6:33 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 19

FH and I have started to discuss what we want to do for our hm, were in the process of getting rough estimates of what exactly we need to save up in the next year so we don't have sticker shock.

A couple weeks ago FHs boss very randomly told him he has a timeshare that has locations all over the world that we could utilize for our hm, and he highly recommended Aruba, which is where I really want to go. FH politely thanked him and didn't want to get too into it since it's a while away.

My question is, has anyone used someone else's timeshare and about how much did it cost? I'm aware every timeshare is different, I honestly have NO idea what to expect if we go this route. I told FH to just ask a little about it and he just keeps saying he will later. So to you all I turn, since I googled and it wasn't much help.

Not reaaallly but my parents had one in Vegas. We went there once--it was nice, but it was really hard to get specific dates. They tried to swap it for years with another location and couldn't, so they finally sold it and bought one in the Florida Keys. Then they spent a few years trying to take a vacation there, couldn't get any dates they could actually make, and donated the thing to a company who sells them and the profits go to charity.

Long story short----the dates you want are hard to get, so if you want it, decide asap.

My moms friends had one. And we took a two week vacation to Lay Vegas and stayed there. It was beautiful the only thing was we had to change our dates twice because they were booked. So I guess you pay and go stay whenever you want?

That's really good to know! Like I said, I know nothing. My grandma had one and it was really easy to use, you could go whenever and there was never an issue with date. But like I said, I know they're all different. And I have no idea how much it was.

My brother has one. We could have used it and went to Atlantic city which is where his is based out of. But we wouldn't have had to pay anything for it. You probably wouldn't have to pay for the room itself. Idk about out of the country ones. But I would say definitely airfare, food etc. Have him talk to his boss now if you are interested bc it has to be booked a while in advance.

My brother has one. They've been trying to sell it for awhile because they don't like it. I think it's more of a to each their own kind of thing.

We have a time share. Its really great and VERY AFFORDABLE to use time, however like many of the other users stated its hard to get the places you want on a particular date. If youre thinking about using his timeshare i would suggest booking early.

This is actually how we are able to go on a honeymoon. FH parents have a timeshare through RCI and they have locations all over the world that you can "trade" for or spend a little extra cash to use. I have NO idea what it costs them, I think it depends on where your timeshare is. We will be using their points to go to St. Martin since FH didn't want to go to Aruba (insert eye roll emoji here, that's where I wanted to go too!). And I agree with @Bekkilynn, we booked ours a year in advance and some places where already full for our dates. Sorry I couldn't be much help on the cost of things!

I would assume this is through RCI. I own a Disney timeshare I can trade through RCI, which we can use all over the world. As an owner, it makes total sense for us to use it. However, if you are going to be paying his boss to use it, it would probably be cheaper to go through a travel agent and get a package deal. If he's gifting it to you, then definitely take advantage! Also be aware, if you choose an all inclusive resort, you'll have to pay daily all inclusive fees still. Example- we are going to use ours to go to Jamaica for our HM, and though the room is "free" we will still be paying a little over 3k in all inclusive fees. This is still an amazing deal, as we are in the highest level suite and it would normally cost over $8,000.

Also agreed with other posters, you need to book at the latest a year in advance. Our hm has been booked since July. RCI let's owners book up to 2 years in advance.

My family owns 2 - one that is a stagnate location and one that is not.

It matters a lot more the week for the price. Out unit (2bed-2baths) cost us 600-900/year in maintenance charges - plus a transfer charge for some weeks/locations (we also have peak weeks) To use my time share in the US virgin islands it cost me 950/week for a 2 bedroom 2 bath (we went with friends).

When my dad rents our unit out (for the one that is in one location) we charge 1,000 for the week - is costs us $675

@futuremrsg that sounds kind of like the same thing he was talking about. Very good to know about the all inclusive!

And I have no idea if we would have to pay or not, the way I was told about it sounded a lot like a gift, but I don't want to assume and be an asshole.

We used DH's timeshare for our honeymoon. They gifted it to us and paid all transfer fees. But we have been thinking about using it for other trips as well. They have more points then they will ever used banked so we would just have to pay the transfer fees, which are on average a couple hundred dollars. It would be hard to get a condo for less than $300 for a week any where else!

I used my parents timeshare for our honeymoon through RCI. It was great. They gifted it to us but, we had no issues with it whatsoever.

I'm so glad I asked this. I had no idea they booked so far in advance. I'm definitely going to have FH ask ASAP. It's not a huge deal if we can't get our exact dates, as I want to hm the Monday after the wedding and FH wants to wait like a month, so really it doesn't matter.

We have DVC, the disney vacation club. We love it, we can go anywhere anytime. Disney and RCI have a deal so if disney doesn't have a hotel in a certain place we go through RCI. We don't have to book far in advance, as long as they have rooms. Some timeshares are horrible about that though.

I haven't rented a timeshare but I have stayed at a few. I love when they should throw in free tickets to shows.

DHs aunt and uncle have a vacation club (like a time share but more flexible) and they gifted us a honeymoon to Vegas. It was pretty nice. We stayed at a holiday inn resort.

One thing to know if you do it is that they will try to sell you a time share as well. Usually they will give you a great deal on something (we got $120 tickets for $35) with the catch of attending a short presentation. (Ours lasted 3 hours) For us it was totally worth it. The show was amazing. But it's not always worth it.

I have a friend that has one and with his you can use it anywhere but you have to wait until close to the date to choose the location and have it guaranteed. It was around $250 for the entire week though so it was a great deal!

My parents have a timeshare through World Mark. They have condos all over the place but they started here on the west coast (I think) and they have a BUNCH of places along our route back home from California to Washington. My mom gifted us a condo for a few nights so I don't know how much it actually costs though. When I was looking up where we wanted to stay, all the room rates were point amounts because that's how World Mark works - you pay for a certain amount of points each year and then use them for your vacation.
