Anyone Else Skipping Garter/bouquet Toss?

J, on January 17, 2019 at 1:54 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 41
We’re not planning on doing these for a few reasons. A large majority of the guests are not single (I mean there are several that are legally single, but in serious relationships and I don’t think they’d consider themselves single for the sake of this tradition). And also I feel really awkward about both. Especially the garter toss - for obvious reasons. But also bouquet toss - just uncomfortable to me for some reason.

So I’m curious if any other couples are skipping these traditions? Are you replacing them with anything? Do both you and your fiancé want to skip them or do you have different opinions?

We’re skipping them. There’s actually another post about this.

Skipping both, its too weird. Both sets of parents asked if we were doing it and I told them no not a lot of people do it anymore and its awkward. They were fine with it.

The weddings that I have attended or been apart of, they do the toss. They do it mostly for the kids. I think it really gets them involved so we will be doing it for sure. Just for the kids.. I'm hoping my brother asks his girlfriend to marry him! So if he does that we will pretend to do the toss but for him to ask her to marry her.

I'm not against the bouquet toss, I think its fun. That being said, I don't need to have it either. Definitely no garter retrieval/toss, grosses me out. lol.

We skipped them for the same reasons you noted. We did not replace them with anything.

We are 100% skipping both traditions! Personally just over them and not interested. Not replacing them with anything, just more party time! 💃🏻🕺🏼

Skipping! FH liked the idea but I thought both were tacky.

Hahaha I just saw it right after you said that! I commented on all of those posts - I love when people do those multiple posts posts (if that makes sense - hopefully you know what I’m referring to - idk how to describe it).

I totally feel ya! I’d feel so awkward with my dad watching the garter retrieval and I just don’t like being the center of attention and I’ll have so much of it that day anyways that I don’t wanna add to it even more.

You want your brother to propose during the bouquet toss? That’s so adorable! And props to you for not just being okay with that, but actually encouraging it! I think that shows how much you love your brother & how humble and respectful you are! That’s so awesome!

And hahaha there won’t be any kids at my wedding besides flower girl so I guess there’s definitely no reason for it for me!

Totally understandable! Bouquet can be fun - garter can be uncomfortable. I actually wonder what the tradition is behind the garter thing.

Totally agree! I just don’t love having so much focus on me that’s why I don’t want bouquet toss. But yeah garter - no thanks! I might still wear one and let my fiancé do a garter retrieval by ourselves if he wants to. Haha.

Yeah we probably won’t replace them either! Just seems like a reason to interrupt the part anyways. We’ll just have the Cupid shuffle come on instead 😂 (my fiancé is obsessed with it)

Cringey! That’s the perfect word! I could never quite describe why I don’t like them! But that’s the word!

I’m in the same situation. My FH likes it. Particularly the garter toss. I think he just thinks it would be fun and wants to use that time to annoy me 🙄😂 (that’s just our relationship and I love him for it) but this just makes me too uncomfortable. I might let him have a private garter retrieval later if he so pleases.
