Any airlines still give perks/upgrades if you tell them you are on your honeymoon?

busybride, on June 1, 2013 at 11:36 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9

We are at the airport now (for a connection) and although there are better seats available, United does not do anything nice for newly weds. In fact, they didn't even say congratulations when I said we were on our honeymoon! They just said, yup there are seats, you'll have to pay more for them.

When my sister was on her honeymoon 4 years ago, she got some complementary cocktails - she flew Southwest, so they don't really have 1st class.

So is special treatment for honeymooners a thing of the past?

My sister 7 years ago got upgraded to first class on their way to hawaii and they gave them a bottle of wine to take home! I don't see that happening now though! Smiley sad

Flying is not what it once was. Oh the stories I could tell, on my thousands of miles flown, pre 9/11.

Honestly, if an airline upgraded every newlywed couple, the airline would be more broke than they already are.

We were upgraded to First Class on our honeymoon from Hawaii to California, but that was 23 years ago! I doubt they do anything anymore. Smiley sad.

We got upgraded for one leg of our flight, but that's only because we were running a day late for our honeymoon (our first flight got delayed and it was a BIG MESS!). We didn't sit together, but got upgraded. On the flight to our honeymoon, we didn't even get to sit together. The other passengers wouldn't switch with us and I had to sit accross the aisle from another newlywed couple. It was really annoying to know my hubby was way in the back of the plane while I was in the front and that we were 24 hours later to our honeymoon destination than we should be while sitting next to another newlywed couple.

And, yes, we had 3 legs on our way to St. Lucia.

    Sorry...rant over.

    Flying has changed a lot.

12 years ago (on my honeymoon) we got a free upgraded both there and back.

I haven't heard of friends getting upgrades like that recently.

I doubt United would do anything nice for anyone, EVER. But, that's just because I loathe United with a fiery passion.

We are flying Delta in October and super seriously doubt they would upgrade us to anything. I think business class is the best we could do. And I am sure the flight will be full anyway.

I'm hoping for at least some free drinks from the beach bar at the place we are staying!

I think airlines are less likely to do anything nowadays for honeymooners.

Hotels on the other hand are likely to throw in extra freebies. One of our hotels that we stayed at during our honeymoon (we stayed in a couple different places for different parts of our trip) had a new surprise waiting for us in our room every day as my husband told them it was our honeymoon in the comment box when booking.

When I got married, 15 years ago, not only did we NOT get upgraded or anything, we almost didn't make our flights, as our first one was late, and we had to jump onto an emergency flight from Southwest to get us to L.A. for our international connection (although SWA was very nice and gave us priority boarding). I still remember that DH had to write the airline afterwards and we ended up getting two free tickets to use due to the circumstances, etc. Now, I doubt they would even open the envelope, as flying has gotten so rough.

I think it's an unrealistic expectation to expect people to give newly weds special treatment. Then you'll have People in flights saying they are as well and no one knows any better

They probably figure if you want the special seat, you'll pay for it.
