Anniversary Date

Erica, on October 14, 2023 at 5:22 PM Posted in Married Life 0 3

Hello all,

My fiancé and I are getting married on a cruise to Mexico next year. Our family and friends will be joining us to make it extra special. However, shortly after making that decision, I was made aware that the ceremony had to be a symbolic wedding because the only availability they had was to hold the ceremony while at sea. I was ok with this however, now we have to get married at the court house almost 4 months before our wedding. I planned a cute date for the wedding 2-4-24. So on paper I guess our marriage date wont be on 2-4-24 rather 10-26-24. This bums me out. I might add that we have been together since December 1, 2009 so we already have that anniversary date. Now we will have 3 anniversary dates.

Made me think, do you all just say how long you have been married when asked or do you go off of how long you have been together?

For me a wedding or a wedding anniversary would take place on the date or anniversary of the actual marriage.

We still take note of other significant dates, for example dating or engagement anniversaries, but with each passing year the wedding anniversary is the one that carries the most significance. What I'd say depends on whether someone asks how long we've known each other or how long we've been married.

We had a similar situation and we say that our wedding anniversary is when we had the wedding that we actually planned and celebrated (1/30). The legal one (10/7) we marked with a text of happy legal-versary and a date the day before (I was out of town) simply so that we can remember the date on the paperwork because its asked sometimes for security stuff. But when people ask how long we've been together? That's dating anniversary (3/12/17). Married? That's the actual celebrated wedding (1/30/23). So for us currently, that's 6.5 years together, almost 10 months married.

Rather than getting married on 10/26, why don't you get married on your current anniversary date (12/1/24). Then you will only have the one date to remember/celebrate.
