Altering open-backed dresses?

Jess, on March 12, 2024 at 6:03 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
I just got engaged, so I'm in the very early planning stages and I'm starting to look at dresses. Most of the dresses I like have open backs! Three reasons this doesn't work for me: My back isn't toned enough for me to feel comfortable with it, I need to be able to wear a bra, and the weather will likely be cold.

Any ideas on how alter a dress so that a bra can be worn with it, but to where it still looks like it was meant to be that way?

I don’t know about altering, but you could add a bolero jacket or something to adjust it.

You could consider adding draped material across from one side to the other. This does not have to add any structure to the dress but just adding covering over the back.

You could ask a seamstress to cover the back! You'd need to buy extra fabric from the dress designer to guarantee that it matches and looks intentional, and it probably won't be cheap, but it can be done. You could also try to special order the dress with a covered back. My dress had an open back originally, and I had it altered to be covered up. Here's the original dress style (this is the photo from the designer's website):

So pretty. Looks much classier that way as well.
