Alterations in Seattle

Miriam, on October 22, 2019 at 5:34 PM Posted in Washington Planning 0 17

Hi All! I just bought my dress and need to have it taken in a bit and shortened. I reached out to a few people recommended by the place I bought my dress, but have no idea what is a reasonable cost. Anyone in the area have recommendations and open to share what they paid? I paid about $900 on the dress (it was a sample and purchased from a consignment store) and it's looking like I will pay another $500+ on alterations, which I was not expecting :/ None of my alterations require intricate details. Thanks in advance!

    Hey there, Miriam!

Welcome to the WeddingWire community Smiley smile

Wedding dress alteration costs can be a sticker shock for sure, especially when you factor in the cost of the actual dress.

It’s also difficult to even know what the ‘standard’ cost should be, as the cost of alterations varies from dress to dress, and depending on the amount of work needed.

The best way to figure out and find the best price in your area would be shopping around, which it seems like you’ve already done. Of the prices you’ve received, are they similar or are there big differences in prices between seamstresses?

Thanks Cliodhna! I have only received one quote after sending some photos. Haven't heard back yet from the others. I was going to try to expand my search to outside Seattle to see if that might lessen the cost a bit.

I've contacted Andra Bose, PA Jens Custom, Jenny Manes, Mari Ninomiya, Romashka bridal, and fragile fit. Only heard back from Mari and Fragile Fit. Fragile fit gave me a better price I think bc they are not in Seattle. What about you?

I contacted Mari Ninomiya (she quoted $450-600), Jenny Manes (she had me set up a time to come in for a price consult. She had a few reviews about people being charged $1000 and not a good job done). I also Beverly Hunnicutt (going in for a consult). And Eltsa Custom Sewing (also going in for consult)

That's about what Mari quoted me as well. Good to know about Jenny Manes. I asked if she could provide a quote via some photos (as Mari did) but she never responded. Would you let me know about the other two? Fragile fit quoted me $350-$400 and is recommended by Blue Sky Bridal where I bought my dress.

I just got quoted about $750 from Jenny Manes. Thats to take it in a bit on sides, add cups, shorten the front, and bustle.

I'm getting mine shortened in the front, maybe take in the train, take in a bit in on the sides and bustle-- so probably around the same amount. Thanks for the update Smiley smile

Looks like an easy material to work with. My has a silk under layer, and organza top layer.

I went to PA Jens for a consult-- she said between $375 - $775, she does 3-5 fitting and takes about 4 months. I think she'd do a great job (she has tons of experience), but I felt like she was lecturing me the whole time and didn't feel that she would really listen to my opinions on how the dress felt but rather what she felt was correct from her 33 years of experience-- which she mentioned multiple times.

I was thinking of going with Fragile Fit. Did you like either of your other consults?

Just went to Beverly Hunnicutt (in Queen Anne). She quoted me $595-680. She said it would take 7 to 8 hours (she charges $85 per hour). She is very honest and friendly. She is an older lady who reminds me of a quirky aunt you might have in your family. You can tell she has been a seamstress for a long time. Her shop is pretty old fashioned and I think her sewing style is too (which I'm ok with).
