Alterations Advice

SLY, on August 25, 2021 at 11:03 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

Hello everyone!

My first fitting for my dresses is in October, and I need some advice for my reception dress! It has a long train, like the ceremony dress, but since I'll be wearing it to dance, I'd have to bustle the train.

My question is: Would it look strange to have the seamstress just hem/cut the entire bottom to one length (floor length)?

I just don't see a point in paying for a bustle on the reception dress when I won't have the train undone at all...

Thoughts? TIA! Smiley shame

For reference, here's a link to a post that has photos of both dresses! (the reception gown is the third photo of the fitted gown!) Reception Dress

I'm also toying with the idea of adding a slight side slit to add more mobility and flexibility for dancing and sitting! Would love any thoughts on that as well!

I looked at both dresses and they look VERY similar. Just curious is there a reason that you bought two similar dresses? They are pretty, I just don't see the point of buying a dress with a train just to cut the train off. I feel like I am missing/not understanding something here lol

Lol they're essentially the same but a different fit. I've worked hard to get my body to wear it is now, and mentally as well and I'm at a place where I feel comfortable wearing something more fitted! It's more for me if that makes sense, and FH hasn't seen me in anything form fitting like this before, so it's also a surprise for him. Also, both dresses were crazy affordable and fit within my budget, so I figured I'd go ahead and go for it!

I couldn't find one that I loved that checked all of my boxes lol, but I fell in love with the way I felt in the fitted one, I just want to alter it to want I envision if that makes sense! I'm also very into things matching and flowing, and I liked how the ceremony and reception dress are the same besides fit.

Removing the train might make it harder to sell later if that is something you are considering, but if not, I agree that it would be silly to pay to bustle it! My dress has a slit, and I love the air flow it provides haha! A slit will also help differ it from your similar ceremony dress too!

I'm open to reselling my dresses, but if they don't I'm fine with that!

Thanks for your feedback, I'm glad to hear having a slit worked for you!

Okay that makes more sense now, show that body off especially if you have worked hard for it! I feel like a seamstress would be able to do it, it does sound like it could get a little expensive though. But if you don't mind paying then definitely go for it!

Thanks! When I spoke to her she gave me a rough estimate and said since there isn't any lace or beading that that would help keep the cost down. I love to dance, so I was thinking either removing the train, or keeping it short enough to not need to bustle, plus a slit would help with mobility.

I think it is absolutely possible to remove the train, and it makes total sense considering it will only be worn for the reception to dance! There are tons of gowns that look like yours that have no train (Think red carpet dresses) that look great! Plus, I personally think bustles are ugly and ruin the aesthetic of dresses. I understand why some people get them since they have to make the same dress work for the entire evening. But, if you have a separate dress for the reception, why pay to take away from the beauty of it??

    Thanks for the feedback Cece!

Do you think adding a side slit to the reception dress would look silly? I'm wanting it to be more of a 'wow' factor when FH and our guests see me since a fitted dress is VERY out of the norm for me.

Do you have photos of the front of the dress? It’s so hard to say only looking at the back of it

I do! Sorry, I should've included that with the post! I'm not wearing my heels in this photo, but I'll have 3" block heels if that makes any difference! Naturally I'm 4'11"!

Wow, that dress looks amazing on you! Would you be doing a high slit?

Thanks so much!! I'm thinking a little above the knee maybe? Between mid thigh and my knee is probably the highest I'm comfortable with!

If it will make the dress more comfortable and easier to dance in, I say go for it! The material of the dress would probably camouflage a non-high slit anyway, except maybe when you’re walking.

That's what I was hoping for! It's not extremely flowy, and has more structure I guess, so I think I'd like the slit to be noticeable when I'm walking etc. like you mentioned.

    Thank you again!

I think it would look fine without much of a train. You could shorten it quite a bit, although having something at the back might make it look less truncated? I think bustling it, if it's going to be for mostly dancing, is going to be a PITA, and there's no reason for it!

Thank you for your response Rosie!

I feel the same way about the bustle. If the train isn't going to be down all evening, I don't see a point in keeping it long and worrying about it. I spoke with my MOH and she also agrees with you about keeping a little bit in the back, but short enough to where it doesn't need a bustle. She's not a fan of the slit, thinking it will make the dress look too choppy, so I'm back and forth on it!
